Having read all of your posts on this subject, so far, I can only thank you for bringing to the attention of all, the plight of your cousin, and all of society. Until we begin to sort out this most important and complicated subject, we haven't yet become truly civilized at all.

Teresa, I don't know what happened to a more impassioned comment I just submitted on this all-important topic. I don't wish to give up, so I'm trying again. Your own sentence
"I told him that the SFGH examiner said Sis is a non-consentable person, meaning her “yes” answers do not qualify as consent. This is similar to a child consenting for sex. It still does not qualify as a real “yes”,"
says it all.
We must become aware as a society, we must demand better more comprehensive legislation. We have only begun to traverse the tip of the iceberg, when it comes to parsing out the complication of our laws concerning sexual assault.

Oh, Teresa, again my heart goes out to your cousin, to you, to your family. Your own quote that I have used at the beginning of my comment to you says everything. How is it that it is not built into law that a mentally disabled person is comparable to a child when it comes to consent? How can a mentally disabled person even begin to understand how to say no, what to do with feelings of intimidation that are always part of coercion from someone bigger, more powerful, deeper and louder voiced? What to do about her own feelings? She can't! She is utterly vulnerable, and the sooner we parse out the law on all matters of sexual assault the better for all of us as a society. We have only begun to traverse the tip of the iceberg in these matters.

I am also sorrowful and horrified, as we all should be---to galvanize action---to read this story, and to know what happened to your cousin, Teresa. You have done the right thing and the brave thing in blogging about this. You point out much of great importantance for everyone to know, for everyone to do. Your connection between disabled and Alzheimer's is also useful and thought provoking. I am happy your cousin survived. I am glad she was found. I am now going to continue reading your other posts on this most important topic. Thank you for your due diligence.

You are amazing Teresa! Thank you for posting about the Northern California Storybook & Literature Festival before and after the event! You are my mentor and I am proud to be a fellow member of the California Writers Club with you. Also, thanks for inviting me to join the Women's National Book Association-San Francisco Chapter last year.

We were fortunate to have articles in the newspaper before and after the July 31st event, especially since the California Writers Club was mentioned. Please share these.

Thank you, Teresa, for posting your pictures and comments. You are so organized. The Northern California Storybook & Literature Festival was a real success. Jamie Finley deserves one thousand "gold stars," or even more.
