Memorial Day. May everyone create peace inward and outward.

According to Merriam-Webster dictionary . . . Memorial Day : the last Monday in May that is a national holiday in the U.S. honoring members of the armed forces who died in wars. Originally held (1868) in commemoration of soldiers killed in the American Civil War, its observance later extended to all U.S. war dead.

Writing Coach Teresa LeYung-Ryan applauds writers and readers for honoring peace and Memorial Day every day and every way. Thank you, everyone!

Teresa LeYung-Ryan thanks immigrant and award-winning author and illustrator Yuyi Morales for honoring the immigrant experience through children’s stories AND Women’s National Book Association/San Francisco Chapter officers and board members for their vital role in this event.

Tuesday, June 3, 2014
San Francisco Main Library, Civic Center
Reception, 5 – 6 pm in the Children’s Center, 2nd Floor
Lecture, 6 – 8 pm in the Koret Auditorium, Lower Level
Free and open to the public! Guest Lecturer: Yuyi Morales

Join the Fisher Children’s Center, the Friends of the San Francisco Public Library, and the Women’s National Book Association/San Francisco Chapter, as they present special guest lecturer, award-winning author and illustrator Yuyi Morales, who will deliver the 18th annual Effie Lee Morris Lecture in Children’s Literature. The theme of Yuyi Morales’s talk will be “Creating Children’s Books: An Immigrant’s Story”

As a Spanish-speaking immigrant and new mother who migrated to the U.S. from Mexico, Yuyi struggled with English and adapting to a new home. She found support in neighborhood libraries, where she and her son practiced English by reading children’s books. There she found her life passion writing and illustrating children’s stories, such as Just a Minute; A Trickster Tale and Counting Book; Little Night / Nochecita; Just in Case, and the 2013 Niño Wrestles the World. She is the first children’s book illustrator of Mexican descent to reach the New York Times Best Sellers List.

This year the Women’s National Book Association, San Francisco Chapter, sponsored a Book Drive to benefit the Living Room, Santa Rosa, CA - a daytime drop-in center that provides a safe haven to ease the adversity of homelessness for women. In January 2014, WNBA-SF launched an early literacy activity at the Living Room, using donated books for picture book storytelling—part of the Living Room’s Mother and Child program. Cheers to WNBA fellow-members!

Conference to Explore Black Arts Movement, Influences

The International Conference on the Black Arts Movement and Legacies will be held on March 1-2, 2014 at the University of California, Merced.

An international two-day conference on the Black Arts Movement will draw world-renowned scholars, musicians and artists, and offer new scholarship and perspectives on the 1960s and 1970s movement.

The International Conference on the Black Arts Movement and Legacies, on March 1-2, 2014 at the University of California, Merced, will provide an opportunity to hear and appreciate the elders, activists and artists who proclaimed “Black is beautiful” in their art, music, poetry and writings, while also shedding light on recent assessments of the movement.

“UC Merced is excited to contribute to the growing body of scholarship on the Black Arts Movement,” said Professor Susan Amussen, who’s also the director of the Center for the Humanities. “We look forward both to the presence of so many outstanding artists on campus and to the exploration of the impact of this important movement on mainstream American culture.”

Scholarly panels, poetry, art, theatre presentations and workshops on a wide variety of topics from the state of black studies in America to the impact of the Black Arts Movement past and present will be discussed.

“The Black Arts Movement and this UC Merced Conference comprise one whopping piece long missing from the jigsaw puzzle of cultural America,” said Al Young, California’s Poet Laureate Emeritus.

Askia Toure, Ishmael Reed, Marvin X, Eugene Redmond, Umar Bin Hassan, Nathan Hare, Emory Douglas, Judy Juanita, Avotcja and other key writers, musicians and artists from the Black Arts and Black Power movements will discuss their work and perform at the conference.

“No discussion of the Black Arts Movement or the radical left can take place without mentioning the late Amiri Baraka,” said event organizer and UC Merced graduate student Kim McMillon. “His words and art represent the beginnings of the movement, birthing black identity. Black Americans in the 1960s and 1970s created a new vision of blackness, one that celebrated the uniqueness of black culture.”

“The work of the Black Arts movement served as inspiration for many later artists, especially those from marginalized communities, and thus has shaped the flowering of artistic work over the last 40 years,” McMillon said.

The conference is co-sponsored by Associated Students of UC Merced, African Diaspora Student Association, the Center for the Humanities, Merced County Arts Council, Merced County Office of Education, Office of Student Life and The California Endowment.

Look which movie has been voted Number 1 in the Life Changes Network “The Top Ten Independent Films of 2013 that Could Change the World”

NO. 10 VITALITY If vitality was within our grasp and everyone knew how to achieve it!

Vitality is a journey into the question: “What is true health?”. It looks at our current broken medical system and shows us a better way. With interviews from leading experts in the medical field, this movie helps us understand our personal role in health and empowers us to get up and get involved. Both inspiring and educational, this movie is helping reframe our understanding of health in a model that is Vitalistic instead of Mechanistic.

NO. 9 COMEDY WARRIORSIf we could all laugh at the hard stuff, maybe there could be less hard stuff.

Take five wounded veterans and four top comedians, the result… laughter and the healing power of humor. “…I love these brave soldiers and how brutally honest and funny they are as comedians.” -Adam Sandler “This is a brilliant and moving movie that finds big laughs… It made me proud to be an American and a comedian.” -Bill Maher “There are legendary comics and then there are legends who are comics. God bless our protectors.” -Dennis Miller

No. 8 Cereal Killers

If what we eat really dictates our health and weight, and knew and ate right for our body!

The film follows Donal – a lean, fit, seemingly healthy 41 year old man – on a quest to hack his genes and drop dead healthy by avoiding the heart disease and diabetes that has afflicted his family.

Can a controversial diet consisting of 70% fat provide the answers?

NO. 7 THE OTHER SHOREIf we didn’t let age or past failures stop us from continuing to live large and go after our dreams!

NO. 6 OCCUPY LOVE

If there were no 1% and no 99%, but just 100% people of Earth, living by the Golden Rule!

Join acclaimed director Velcrow Ripper (Scared Sacred, Fierce Light) on a journey deep inside the revolution of the heart that is erupting around the planet, as he asks the question, “How could the crisis we are facing become a love story?” Occupy Love is a moving, transformative, heartfelt film, featuring Ripper’s signature stunning visuals and rich soundscapes. A powerful cinematic experience that will leave audiences inspired.

NO. 5 SIRIUS

If aliens existed and everyone knew it and it wasn’t a secret anymore!

Sirius? is a feature length documentary that follows Dr. Steven Greer -?? an Emergency Medicine doctor turned UFO/ New Energy researcher – as he struggles to disclose top secret information about classified energy & propulsion techniques. Along the way, Dr. Greer investigates new technology and sheds light on criminal suppression. He accumulates over 100 Government, Military, and Intelligence Community witnesses who testify on record about their first-hand experiences with UFOs and with the cover-up.

NO. 4 TAKE BACK YOUR POWER

What if conspiracies were true then the truth would be…just truth!

Utility companies are replacing electricity, gas and water meters worldwide with new generation “smart” meters at an unprecedented rate. Take Back Your Power investigates the benefits and risks of this ubiquitous “smart” grid program, with insight from insiders, expert researchers, politicians, doctors, and concerned communities. Transparency advocate Josh del Sol takes us on a journey of revelation and discovery, as he questions corporations’ right to tap our private information and erode our rights in the name of “green.”

NO. 3 HUMANO

If we realized we are all Human and just maybe we all came from the same place!

Alan is twenty-five years old and is looking for the reason of his existence, the meaning of life. A camera and a notebook filled with questions are the only items he needs to set off on a journey to the Andes range. With Placido, an Andean paqo (“priest”), he will be taken on an introspective journey such as has never been documented before.

NO. 2 SPARK

If we all lived in communities supporting each other and our individual and collective creativity!

Each year, 60,000 people from around the globe gather in a dusty windswept Nevada desert to build a temporary city, collaborating on a large-scale art and partying for a week before burning a giant effigy in a ritual frenzy. Rooted in principles of self-expression, self-reliance and community effort, Burning Man has grown famous for stirring ordinary people to shed their nine-to-five existence and act on their dreams.

NO. 1 FEMME: Women Healing the World
If “girls ran the world,” or better yet, if women and men “ruled” the world, in balance, together!

“A celebration of women around the world actively transforming and healing our global society. Sharon Stone and leading experts in religion, science, history, politics and entertainment, discuss solutions to the multiple crises we are faced with. FEMME focuses on utilizing a feminine approach with nurturing energy to inspire a new hope for the future.
