PEN OAKLAND “The Blue-Collar PEN”

The 22nd Annual PEN Oakland-Josephine Miles National Literary Awards will take place on Saturday, December 1, 2012, at the Oakland Public Library, Rockridge Branch, 5366 College Avenue from 2 to 5 p.m. The ceremony is free and open to the public, and will be followed by a reception and book signings.

I met Joanna at Book Passage, Ferry Building, San Francisco on July 9, 2012 when I was interviewing Carol Sheldon, author of Mother Lode, who was being honored by Left Coast Writers.

Q: Who can be a member of SHE WRITES?

A: We welcome individuals who consider themselves writers!  You don’t need to be a published, professional writer, but most of our members are, or aspire to become so.  When you fill out your profile, please use a name rather than a business.  We prefer first and last names, but we understand if there’s a good reason you need to use a pseudonym.

Businesses: We will not approve businesses as members.  We do not allow unapproved vending on SHE WRITES.  If you wish to promote your services to the writers on the site, there are a few options: 1) advertise with us 2) pitch our SHE NEEDS HELP team, and we will consider promoting you on a case-by-case basis. See our terms of use for further clarification.

Men: We welcome men.  Our reasoning is twofold: 1) legal2) philosophical.  We would not want to be excluded from a site called HE WRITES because of our sex or gender.

Teresa LeYung-Ryan will speak on creating your writing platform and building your brand as a writer.  Poet and composer Judith Cody discusses how to write for and publish an anthology; author and columnist Yolande Barial will demonstrate the importance of finding your passion, while author an educator Joan Gelfand will deconstruct the process of getting published. This workshop is for writers with a desire to find their voice, write, and promote their work. A reception and book-signing will follow the presentation.

The 20th Annual PEN Oakland-Josephine Miles National Literary Awards will take place on Saturday, December 11, 2010, at the Oakland Public Library, Rockridge Branch, 5366 College Avenue–from 2 to 5 p.m.

I, Teresa LeYung Ryan (manuscript consultant & writing career coach), will be there with my pal Kim McMillon (playwright and radio show producer).

The ceremony, which will be followed by a reception and book signings, is free and open to the public. Former state Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata will be the keynote speaker.

PEN Oakland, founded in 1989, is a chapter of PEN International, founded in 1921.
Dubbed “the blue collar PEN” by the New York Times, PEN Oakland annually sponsors the PEN Oakland-Josephine Miles Book Awards, named for the late poet and faculty member of U.C. Berkeley’s English Department. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the awards.
Each year PEN Oakland presents an award to outstanding book titles published in the previous year.

Let's Bring Back Oakland Bookmobile

Your post regarding the proposal from ALA Subcommittee on Bookmobiles and the approval from ALA Public Awareness Committee to designate April 14, 2010 as National Bookmobile Day brings me joy.  I will share this news with fellow authors and “Save the Libraries” advocates.

In Oakland, CA, we have lost our bookmobile (and other library resources) when City officials passed the budget last year 2009.  Eliminating the Bookmobile has created a huge loss for library patrons, especially kids and seniors.  I invite all Bookmobile lovers/patrons to help by sharing their opinions on http://savethelibraries.spaces.live.com.  Please click on” YOUR Bookmobile Story” and share yours.
