It’s also bittersweet – the ending of a year; what projects didn’t get done?

It’s also extremely sad – people we care about getting sick, suffering, dying.

As I give thanks to every living being who has helped me come this far in life, I give thanks to every angel who has inspired me to find joy in work.

This year, I am extremely sad for these heroes who have suffered and died. These dear hearts are: Kathi Kamen Goldmark, Jacquelyn Amira Hayes, Dr. Pamela Rogers, Miriam May Meyer Pollock, and Lori Hope.  Thank you, Kathi, Amira, Pamela, Miriam, and Lori, for all that you did to help people and for the legacies you leave behind.

Did you know that the City of San Francisco had declared Nov. 8, 2008 as "Kathi Kamen Goldmark Day"? That same day, Kathi received the Women's National Book Association (WNBA) Award.

Vibrant Dr. Pamela D. Rogers helped women understand and enjoy their own sexuality

A smile from Miriam Pollock would make one's whole day bright.

Two other beautiful hearts have left for their next journeys – my husband’s cousin Sue and twenty-three year old Leah.

I miss you all so much; and, I am so sad for your loved ones.

I found “Veterans and Mental Health: We Owe Them Better”  blog post by Mike Fitzpatrick, NAMI Executive Director

Last year, more than 1.2 million veterans were treated by the U.S. Department of Veterans’ Affairs (VA) health care system, about a third for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). That is an increase of about 25 percent from four years before, as troops return home from Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Washington Post reports that approximately 18 veterans die from suicide every day. Yet in survey released in September, the VA reported that 70 percent of its doctors, nurses and social workers believe the system lacks the staff and space to provide adequate mental health care. More than 37 percent said they cannot schedule an appointment for a new patient within 14-days.

My beautiful mom (not a Veteran but was an orphan during World War II) suffered mental illness all her life and I use my writings to honor her. Today, Tuesday November 23, 2010,  Noon– at steps of San Francisco City Hall.  MamaCoAtl, playwright Kim McMillon, Poet Nina Serrano, city officials and community members will kick off 16 Days of ARTivism for healing and education to end violence against women and girls. How befitting that the 16 days of ARTivism will then begin on Nov. 25 United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women & Girls, which is also Thanksgiving Day this year 2010!
