Coach Teresa LeYung-Ryan here again . . . A remarkable dream about my mother and me has become the centerpiece of my 10-minute play Answer Me Now. My heritage is Chinese. When director Lennie Dean asked me to consider changing a few words in my script to fit the actress’s heritage, the “alarms” went off in my head. Oh no, I thought . . . I don’t want my words altered.

“Stacey Marie Kerr’s heritage is Jewish,” Lennie said. “Instead of calling her mother ‘MahMa,’ she would be saying ‘Mameh’ and instead of referring to her father as BahBa, she would be saying ‘Tateh.’ Think it over, tweaking a few words makes the piece personal for the actress on stage.” Lennie added.

I thought it over in the next three seconds of that phone conversation. “Yes! From now on, I would tweak those pronouns and the words ‘China’ and ‘Hong Kong’ to fit the actress whoever she may be.” Asian, Jewish, Italian, Russian, American, Australian, African actress? I can see them and hear them! I’d be honored to change a few words to fit each woman.

I met Stacey Marie Kerr on June 2, 2012. She said she has “adopted” my monologue, she has made the words hers. I couldn’t be more pleased. Thank you, Lennie and Stacey!

Thank you, Linda Loveland Reid, for creating the playwriting contest!

Teresa LeYung-Ryan’s 10-minute monologue Answer Me Now (middle-aged woman asks her dead mother a question) is one of nine winning-plays to be produced by Redwood Writers & 6th Street Playhouse Play Festival in Santa Rosa, CA.

“Speaking of angels, did I send you the link to my interview for Local Heroes? Aside from the 5 minute clip, there is a 20 minute version on YouTube where I discuss the pivotal night in my life when I was visited by an otherworldly woman bathed in white light.

My dear colleague Kate Farrell (yes! this is the same Kate Farrell who created the anthology Wisdom Has a Voice: Daughters Remember Mothers) tells me via facebook:

“Hi Teresa! I know how supportive you are of library programs. Here’s a article about how Wallenberg students kept the school library running with no librarian and have received such community recognition.”

By Bryan Lowry

SF Public Schools Examiner

Wallenberg Traditional High School is one of the smaller high schools in SFUSD with an enrollment of less than 700 students. By comparison Lowell High School holds over 2,600 students. Wallenberg’s tiny campus was once an elementary school before transforming into a high school in 1981 named after Raoul Wallenberg, a Swedish diplomat who saved the lives of thousands of European Jews during the Holocaust. Accordingly, the school’s maxim is: “One individual can make a difference.

For the past four years Logan Cai, a student currently in his senior year, has been proving the truth of that maxim. The school requires students to perform community service in order to graduate, but Logan’s service has far surpassed the minimum requirements. Among many other projects, Logan has been volunteering as the school’s librarian. His efforts have earned him the 2011 Jefferson Award for public service.

Budget shortfalls in 2009 caused SFUSD to lay off Kate Farrell, the school’s librarian, and cut her position from the school’s budget for the 2009-2010 school year. Wallenberg was on the verge of becoming a high school without a library until Ms. Farrell made a suggestion: let Logan run it. Logan and his partner Fanny Lau were founding members of the school’s Ravenous Readers Book Club and Ms. Farrell had trained them as library interns. When the budget crisis occurred she believed her interns were ready to take the reins.

What Can I Learn from the Stories in Anthologies?

Readers can learn about other cultures, other times, and even experience events through the “safety” of pages. Readers who are also writers can learn how to craft stories from authors who contribute their work to anthologies.

* * * * * * * *

On May 5, 2011 while I was at the San Francisco Public Library, Main Branch, getting ready for the Women’s National Book Association-SF Chapter celebration, I received a call from Christopher Wachlin of California Writers Club-SF Peninsula Branch. Chris is one of the talented authors in the anthology Fault Zone. His news was that Kepler’s Books and Magazines (in Menlo Park, CA) has sold out the anthology and Chris would be delivering more books.

“For readers who love engaging stories and poems, Fault Zone fits the bill.” –Teresa LeYung Ryan, author of the mother-daughter novel Love Made of Heart and the writer’s guide Build Your Writer’s Platform & Fan Base in 22 Days

I look forward to seeing the contributing authors, editor Lisa Meltzer Penn, and all the champions who made the anthology a reality. Bravi! See you at the San Mateo County Fair-Literary Arts Department events June 11-19, 2011 (I, Teresa LeYung Ryan, will be presenting on Friday June 17, 8:00-9:00pm)

* * * * * * * *

Here’s my email to Editor-in-Chielf Kate Farrell regarding her anthology Wisdom Has a Voice: Every Daughter’s Memories of Mother

May 11, 2011

Dear Kate,

I’ve read your beautiful introduction, Amber Lea Starfire’s and Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg’s, and the stories by Pat Jackson-Colando, Diane Hurles, Marilyn J. Curry, Nancy LaTurner, Barbara Toboni, Ana Manwaring, and Laura McHale Holland.

The stories touched me deeply.

My praise:

“How daughters remember mothers’ lives, resurrecting maternal hold or finding courage through translations of their sorrows, dreams and triumphs. Daughters answering the haunting question: ‘To be or not to be like them?’ The words and pages in the anthology Wisdom Has a Voice (Edited by Kate Farrell) touch the sometimes fragile oftentimes vibrant heart. Beautiful.” Teresa LeYung-Ryan–author of Love Made of Heart and the Build Your Writer’s… workbook series

Too long? Let me know.

Thank you for including me in your labor of love; I predict great success for this anthology.

Sincerely,

Teresa LeYung-Ryan

May 13, 2011 Kate emailed back. She transformed my three long sentences into two concise ones. Thank you, Kate!

So, now my praise reads:

In Wisdom Has a Voice daughters answer the haunting question: ‘To be or not to be like mother?’ As they remember their mothers’ lives, they discover courage in touching translations of her sorrows, dreams, and triumphs. Beautiful.” —Teresa LeYung-Ryan, author of Love Made of Heart and Build Your Writer’s…workbook series

* * * * * * * *

Cheers to all the hearts in these two anthologies!

1 in 6 adults and almost 1 in 10 children suffer from a diagnosable mental illness.

In spite of my being very careful not to shake hands and later rub my eyes, I caught a virus earlier in the week. Turned out to be a pleasant week though, nursing the cold or flu, whatever it is.

Tuesday I went to my half-time day job and got all caught up with voicemail and email.
Wednesday I knew I had to stay home and not push myself. So, this week I missed a memorial, a Chinese meal with my aunt & uncle to celebrate Lunar New Year, and the Women’s National Book Association event at Castro Valley Library. However, I had a chance to “chat” with a pal in Australia on Yahoo; I’m not a speedy typist but that worked out fine.

It’s Sunday. Rain is lovely. Got up around 9:30am. Prioritized my work for next week.

I’m drinking green tea, watching old movies on YouTube and working as the writing-career-coach.

Colleagues and friends made my day:

Margaret Davis, author of Straight Down the Middle, with her email acknowledging receipt of the CD of photos (of her beautiful book launch) I created for her.

Mil Pribble emailed to tell me about Chinese in Mendocino County. Mil said: “…a very well done mostly pictorial account, published last year by Arcadia Publishing, (Available through The Temple of Quan Tai in Mendocino.) It was assembled and written by Lorraine Hee-Chorley, a friend of mine who is the great grand-daughter of John Song Lee, aka Joe Lee, who in the early 1850s organized a flotilla of seven junks and attempted to cross the Pacific, intending to land at Monterey.”

Kate Farrell, author of Girl in the Mirror www.girlinthemirror.info and Workshop Leader www.wisdomhasavoice.com , says the Redwood Branch of California Writers Club http://www.calwriters.org/ has grown so big that they had to change meeting place to Flamingo Conference Resort & Spa in Santa Rosa, CA

Pal Olga offers her home to host a private party.

My hubby started a new job a month ago and he’s studying for a course, so, it’s not like I’m missing weekend outdoor fun.

So, I’m working (with Carole Lombard movies on YouTube as inspiration), pumping vitamin C, and resting.

Webpages getting my immediate attention:

http://www.americanshortfiction.org/

http://savingcinderella.ning.com/

It’s almost 4:00pm; time to rest a bit. Being under the weather is nothing to “sneeze” at.
Happy Writing!  Happy Name Building!
