Oct. 26, 2012

Hi Teresa;
The book reviewer website and our monthly newsletter need to interview a writing/publishing industry pro. This is last-minute–the person I planned to interview for this month had some personal issues and had to drop out. Any chance you’d be interested? The interview would go out to our newsletter subscribers. I’d need you to answer questions, and I’d need it back by the 28th, so around 48 hours. Let me know if you are interested.

Best Regards,

What a fun weekend it shall be — interviewed by you, and, my writing to Mr. Richard Bolles of What Color Is Your Parachute (last week, I found a letter he had sent me 18 years ago!)

Teresa,
Great! I watched your interview on Bay Sunday– lots of good ideas, I will add a link to that video if you like. Here are some interview questions, feel free to expand them.

1. Why don’t you tell us a little bit about your background in the industry?
2. What is your opinion on self-publishing vs. traditional publishing with an agent?
3. What do you feel is the most important thing that authors can do to promote their books?
4. What are your feelings on Social Media? (Facebook, Google+, Twitter, etc)
5. Do you feel that book marketing for fiction is different than book marketing for non-fiction?
6. What are some of the biggest mistakes that authors make when trying to promote their books?
7. Do you have any other useful advice for beginning authors?
8. How can authors contact you if they have any questions?

Thanks for doing this at such short notice!

Here’s the answer to Question #1; please go to Christy Pinheiro’s StepByStepPublishing for answers to Questions 2 through 8 . . .

1. Why don’t you tell us a little bit about your background in the industry?
My name is Teresa LeYung-Ryan and my clients call me Writing-and-Platform-Building Coach Teresa. I wish to thank Christy Pinheiro-Silva for this interview, and, I encourage everyone to look for the core messages in my responses—which are: Reach out, not stress out, to material your dreams; and, wear your two hats as a writer and be happy(whether you’re writing fiction, narrative nonfiction, or prescription nonfiction also known as “how to” books/articles).This is what happened to me, over ten years ago, and the choices I’ve made.I had a dream—a dream of connecting with readers the way Maxine Hong Kingston touched me with her memoir The Woman Warrior. My writer’s journey started with learning the components of a story in a ten-week course Writing Children’s Literature at the community center and forming a critique group with three classmates after the course ended.Fast forward. After seven years of writing and rewriting, showing up at critique meetings twice a month, I received a gift from a friend—a brochure for the Jack London Writers’ Conference with an entry form for their writing contest.

****

Two months later, at the conference, I met members from California Writers’ Club and I received “Second Prize” in the Novel Category in the writing contest. I thought that by being a winner in a contest, surely I would attract mentors and be “discovered” by an agent the following week. (Are you laughing?)Fast forward.

****

After sending query letters and the first two chapters of my novel to dozens of agents over a year, and, receiving “rejection letters” and getting very depressed, I took a friend’s advice and registered for a workshop “How to Get Published.” Also, I got together with two other contest-winners (Luisa Adams and Martha Alderson) and we pledged to help each other on our writers’ journeys.I took a six-week leave of absence from my job to perform the last big rewrite of my manuscript. (Note: Surround yourself with people who really support your dreams. My husband and my friends were cheering for me.)

Fast forward. My first novel Love Made of Heart (a mother-daughter love story) is used in college composition classes; available at public libraries; recommended by the CA School Library Association and the CA Reading Association; and archived at the San Francisco History Center. October 2012 marks the tenth anniversary of Love Made of Heart. The book is still in print, and, I continue to meet new fans.

For the past nine years, through my coaching and my workbook Build Your Writer’s Platform & Fanbase In 22 Days, I have been helping writers reach out, not stress out, to attract agents, editors, publishers, readers, and media attention.

Coach Teresa here . . .

If you have seen my co-presenting at San Francisco Writers Conference with The Elisa “Sasa” Southard in the past 9 years, then you’ll recognize her speaking those magic words “Yes I can!”

Cheers to Christy! Cheers to Sasa! Cheers to Everyone!

My dear colleague Kate Farrell (yes! this is the same Kate Farrell who created the anthology Wisdom Has a Voice: Daughters Remember Mothers) tells me via facebook:

“Hi Teresa! I know how supportive you are of library programs. Here’s a article about how Wallenberg students kept the school library running with no librarian and have received such community recognition.”

By Bryan Lowry

Wallenberg Traditional High School is one of the smaller high schools in SFUSD with an enrollment of less than 700 students. By comparison Lowell High School holds over 2,600 students. Wallenberg’s tiny campus was once an elementary school before transforming into a high school in 1981 named after Raoul Wallenberg, a Swedish diplomat who saved the lives of thousands of European Jews during the Holocaust. Accordingly, the school’s maxim is: “One individual can make a difference.

For the past four years Logan Cai, a student currently in his senior year, has been proving the truth of that maxim. The school requires students to perform community service in order to graduate, but Logan’s service has far surpassed the minimum requirements. Among many other projects, Logan has been volunteering as the school’s librarian. His efforts have earned him the 2011 Jefferson Award for public service.

Budget shortfalls in 2009 caused SFUSD to lay off Kate Farrell, the school’s librarian, and cut her position from the school’s budget for the 2009-2010 school year. Wallenberg was on the verge of becoming a high school without a library until Ms. Farrell made a suggestion: let Logan run it. Logan and his partner Fanny Lau were founding members of the school’s Ravenous Readers Book Club and Ms. Farrell had trained them as library interns. When the budget crisis occurred she believed her interns were ready to take the reins.

What Is a Talking Tagline for Writers of Fiction and Nonfiction?

Every year at the exciting San Francisco Writers Conference, Talking-Tagline Teacher Elisa Southard and Platform-Building Coach Teresa LeYung Ryan (yours truly) show writers of all genres how to hook attention–in person, in emails & voicemail, on their websites, blogs, facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, and other social-media forums. Hook attention with your talking-tagline!

When someone asks: “Elisa, what do you do?” Elisa responds with: “Through my book Break Through the Noise, I help professionals power up their marketing messages.” (she doesn’t say “I’m a writer” because… what if the other person doesn’t ask her more questions. )

When someone asks: “Teresa, what do you do?” Teresa responds with: “Through my book, I help writers build their platforms and fanbase in 22 days.”

As a novelist and memoirist, Teresa says: “Through my book Love Made of Heart, I inspire adult-children of mentally-ill parents to speak openly about the stigmas.” (When I was newbie, my playwright friend Kim McMillon would invite me to parties. Someone would come up to me and ask “So, Teresa, what do you do?” I would answer “I write novels.” Then the other person would ask “Are you published?” and I would shyly say “Not yet.” Where did that conversation take me? Nowhere. Many times, the other person would corner me and tell me what he/she writes (a monologue).

Here are other examples of how to engage with the talking-tagline:

As a travel writer, Elisa says: “I help people turn curiosity into confidence when they travel.”

As a guest speaker to schools, Teresa uses: “Through my book, I help survivors of family violence find their own voices.”

“Thank you Dearest Teresa, for your kind words before you even saw the film below. I hope hope hope you like it. I loved the process start to finish! You are a marvelous subject, to me the result is pure magic. It is up on Youtube, too— I posted it to facebook and it should be on your homepage.”

My reply:

“Dear Director/Producer/Editor/Filmmaker Chandra,
‘Water Boy Teresa’ here. You are a remarkable ‘expressionist’ — in your art — in your jewelry-making — in the way you dress — in your speech — in how you do ‘friendship,’ and now, in yo ur films. Thank you, Chandra Garsson (the power of your name!), for letting me be the subject of your color-filled, sound-filled, humor-filled, artsy video. Hey, MaMa, my friend Chandra made a film and she is so clever–she edited it so that in the beginning I talk about how I enjoy helping writers link their names to issues they write about . . . at the end, Chandra included the talk about how you had changed your name several times… I think the film is beautiful and I got to talk about my mom candidly and joyfully. I’m so happy that you Chandra included the photo of you and me…speaking up as public library advocates at Oakland City Council meetings. The editing of the video took many days; I know it was a labor of love. Love made of Chandra’s heart. Thank you, dear friend, for a magnificent gift !!!!!!!

Humbly, Teresa”

Also I need to thank dear friend Kim McMillon (playwright, literacy advocate, teacher, producer). It was at a” Kim McMillon Production” at Swans Marketplace in Oakland where I met Chandra Garsson. Kim had given me (a newbie then) stage time to read a scene from pre-published Love Made of Heart. I ended my presentation with “NO to domestic violence and child abuse!!” and when I got off the stage, Chandra introduced herself… Kim, you are a hero in the writing community. I’ve met so many big-hearted do-ers through you; MamaCoAtl I’m talking about you Kim, thank you for being a beautiful friend. I see how busy you are by looking at your blog http://artsinthevalley.wordpress.com

I thank my friends and Chandra’s friends for being so supportive.

Sincerely,

Another Magical Week for Writing Career Coach Teresa

Today is Tuesday, February 1, 2011

I received the proof of my workbook BUILD YOUR WRITER’S PLATFORM & FANBASE IN 22 DAYS: Attract Agents, Editors, Publishers, Readers, and Media Attention NOW from CreateSpace and it looks beautiful! As soon as I review the proof closely, I will authorize CreateSpace to start distributions of the physical book and make the ebook available through Kindle, iPad, iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Mac, and PC. Thank you, CreateSpace staff and CreateSpace “Community” ! Thank you, graphic designer Gail Cao Mazhari, for making the front cover, back cover, and spine so beautiful !!!!

* * * * * * * * * *  * * * * * *

After attending Mary E. Knippel‘s remarkably motivating workshop (creating my 2011 vision board/collage) on Sunday and spending time with the other women (learning something from each one of them), I started mapping out my next workbook BUILD YOUR WRITING LIFE IN 22 DAYS: For Fiction & Narrative Non-Fiction Writers. Thank you so much, Creativity Coach Mary!

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

My dear friend Chandra Garsson, the exquisite artist/filmmaker, has been announcing on facebook:

Jan. 31, 2011, 2:22pm “Less is definitely more. It takes hours to whittle down a minute to a few seconds toward a three minute film about my friend Teresa LeYung Ryan. I am now at 6 minutes, 39 seconds and I’m thinking maaaaaybe 4-5 minutes.”

Jan. 31, 2011, 6:06pm “I’ve got the film down to 5 minutes, 17 seconds, and because I have a tendency yo love any creative work I do, I’m SO tempted not to edit any more. But I know it should be shorter.”

Feb. 1, 2011, am “4 minutes 56 seconds, and well worth the watch. Long on time, but very lively. It had to be both, it’s Teresa, she’s worth it. Soon in a theater near you— well— in your computer anyway.”

Feb. 1, 2011, pm “Film is just under five minutes, I’m happy. I can’t imagine what Teresa will think, seeing herself presented through my eyes.”

Here’s my response:

Dear Chandra, I thought I was going to be “water boy” schlepping stuff while you film people in The City. Your wanting to make me the subject of one of your films is already the best gift. Everything else is icing on the cake. You add “magic” to all you do. You had painted my Love Made of Heart bookcase . . . and now a film about goofy me–I can’t wait to see it. I thank you. Humbly, Teresa

Teresa LeYung Ryan uses her workbook BUILD YOUR WRITER’S PLATFORM & FANBASE IN 22 DAYS: Attract Agents, Editors, Publishers, Readers, and Media Attention NOW to help writers gain a competitive edge. She uses her novel LOVE MADE OF HEART to inspire adult-children of mentally-ill parents to speak openly about the stigmas that their parents suffer. Also, Teresa is a manuscript consultant; she likes quirky and feisty protagonists.
