By car, the time it would take to say “Bonjour” to … Paris, Aix-les-Bains, Avignon, Apt and the Villages in the Luberon, and, Nice (in FRANCE)… would be more than 13 hours without stopping.
On foot, it would take me more than 10 days… and that is if I do not stop to take photographs, use les toilettes, sleep, bathe or eat.
21 juin 2025 Avignon FRANCE
I used to drive, a lot. [ Je conduisais beaucoup.]
I drove all over the state of California in USA for my mother-daughter novel Love Made of Heart - to bookstores, schools, libraries, writers’ conferences, writers’ organizations, book festivals, trade shows, community events. I will always be grateful to literary agent Stacey Glick, Vice President, and everyone at Dystel, Goderich & Bourret LLC; acquisition editor/director John Scognamiglio, president Steven Zacharius, publisher Laurie Perkin, art director Louis Malcangi, and everyone at Kensington Publishing Corp. in New York; sales representatives, teachers, librarians, my then spouse, my sister, friends, mentors, colleagues, the folks at the day job – the East Bay Regional Park District, the folks in the communities, members of California Writers Club, members of Women’s National Book Association, members of Women’s Brain Exchange, every reader … everyone who cheered for me and my work, everyone who invited me and my book to show up.
I used to see the world from behind the steering wheel. Now I see not only with my eyes, but also, with each foot step I take.
In France, I walk and gawk … at the architecture, the window displays at shops, the heavy doors, the balconies, the gardens, the churches, business signs, the trees, les boulangeries, les pâtisseries, the names of streets, the sky, the food, the food, the food. Aahh… the visuals.
As for the audios .. I adore hearing the French language. My favorite phrase right now is “Je vous en prie.” I feel like I’m eight years old again… learning a new language. It’s slow going for me; the verb conjugations; the article-noun pairing; the silent letters, the silent syllables; the “liaison” (connecting sounds). At first, I thought… why do so many French words begin with the letter “L”? That’s what I hear. When I see the spelling … no more mystery; when a noun begins with a vowel, the pronunciation of the article preceding the noun is rolled onto the noun.
le + appartement becomes l’appartement — sounds like “la-par-te-mont”
le + aéroport becomes l’aéroport — sounds like “lair-o-port”
le + orchestre becomes l’orchestre — sounds like “lor-kestr”

20 juin 2025
Last night June 19, 2025, after a cool shower (it was 36 Celsius / 96.8 Fahrenheit in Avignon), new energy flowed through me. I worked until 8:00am June 20, then, I went to bed.
I haven’t been this happy in many many months. I am grateful. I celebrate everyone who has been kind to me.
Being in FRANCE this time has revived me. It’s because for the first time, I am in a real home for many weeks, not a vacation rental. Through the kindness of MCC who had asked her dear friend CK to rent me the studio apartment in her house in Avignon… I am experiencing tranquility.
CK is kind and creative, and, she has finished rewrites of her novel. Also, she has written a series of stories for children. I celebrate CK’s perseverance!
Happiness spreads. Just the day before, I opened an email from author Ann Tashi Slater https://www.anntashislater.com/
who shared her happy news -
Traveling in Bardo: The Art of Living in an Impermanent World (Hachette Book Group) is arriving September 9, 2025!
I celebrate Ann’s perseverance! I met Ann at San Francisco Writers Conference when Sasa Southard, Mary E. Knippel and I were presenters, and, our pal Margie Yee Webb was in Linda Lee’s super team.
I pre-ordered Ann’s remarkable book.

And… I so hope to see Ann on September 27, 2025 at Book Passage Corte Madera in California.

In this blog post, I shall include references to movies that have hooked my attention this month.
Why do I study movies? To honor the writers of the scripts. While the names of the authors for books and stage plays are almost always associated with the title of the book or the play … the names of the writers for screenplays aren’t always the foremost association with the movie titles. Generally, in the public’s eyes.. the names of the actors and directors get the most attention. When a movie compels me to watch it again, I always rewind to the opening credits to say “Thank you” to the writer(s).

15 juin 2025 in Avignon, FRANCE
Today I realized that I know more people who are dead than those who are alive. I’m not being funny… it’s just that on June 11, 2025, I said to Marie-Christine that I would like to show Sharon one of my favorite places in the town of Apt – Maison du Parc du Luberon https://www.parcduluberon.fr/ 60, place Jean-Jaures, 84400 Apt. While I was mesmerized by the display showing a scale of geological times in the Luberon region (10 million years ago, 35 million years ago, 150 million years ago), the phrase “ashes to ashes, dust to dust,” came to mind.
Standing there, in front of the display
… the voice inside me said … when I die, I shall be part of the geology of the planet.
[ … la voix en moi m’a dit … quand je mourrai … je ferai partie de la géologie de la planète.]

Dear Readers,
Bonjour.
The suffering in this world … the enormities of disasters … what can I do to ease the pain?
I have faith that if I share information relating to health which I’ve been fortunate to gain, surely the energy would help someone who would help someone else, on and on.
I am staying at dear friends’ home, however, not near wonderful chiropractor Dr. Jae Reed, D.C. https://azureskychiro.com/ to get treatments – Neuro Integration System and Neuro Emotional Technique…
Luckily, I found another wonderful chiropractor – Dr. Kerry Lilley, D.C. https://chiropracticbenicia.com/
Why do I need a chiropractor?
The apartment in Paris I was in from March 1 – 26 was beautifully furnished, however, the person (who lived in the apartment above the one I was in) did not honor “Apartment-Living Rules”. She would come home at all hours… walk in clunky shoes (fast walking too), and, she probably had removed floor rugs. The vibrations rolling across parquet floor when the entire building is quiet = unhealthy energy over my head.
Around 3:00am on March 4th, my brain so tired from the disturbance… I thought taking a shower would do me good.
I forgot that the high-wall bathtub … I would need to “ride side saddle” going in and coming out.
I fell.. coming out of the tub.
The distance from the rim of the bathtub to the floor is 22 inches while the distance from my knee joint to the bottom of my foot is about 16 inches. If I were a horse in a steeplechase … my legs didn’t clear the extra 6 inches. So, I fell. BAMM.
[ Thank you, Marisa, for having taught me how to fall safely (Aikido wisdom) https://lovemadeofheart.com/blog/mountain-turtle-marisa/ While falling, time went into slow motion for me to stretch out both arms to minimize injuries. ]
At the time, I thought only my right knee sustained minimal impact. Wrong.
During my last two weeks in City of Light… my wanting to join my friends, I used Le Métro (Paris subway) … oh the stairs and more stairs … I realized that the right side of my body had been injured.
Last week, I learned from Dr. Lilley what the Psoas muscles are.
Today (May 29), during treatment, I asked Dr. Lilley to examine my wrists. Why are they achy with heat?
She said:
“Your smart body knows what to do. The heat you’re feeling in your wrists is your body’s way to release the trauma. Drink water. When exhaling, release the out breath twice. Release the trauma. Increase vitamin C for the time being.”
I thank Dr. Kerry Lilley https://chiropracticbenicia.com/, Dr. Jae Reed https://azureskychiro.com/, Stephanie Wilger, NC https://stephaniewilgernc.net/,
Dr. Amy Grace Lam https://www.vibrationalenergywellness.com/, Marie-Christine Cornet https://www.mariechristinecornet.com/,
Gilles Marin https://www.chineitsang.com/, and all the healers who have taught me how to listen to my Brain-Body communicate… how to continue fostering the Smart Body.
I thank everyone who has encouraged me to seek help.
I thank everyone who plays a role in helping me find ways to Wellness.

“The Essential Role of the Psoas Muscle”
By: Stephen Falatyn, MD, Orthopedic Surgeon
https://www.spine-health.com/blog/essential-role-psoas-muscle
* * * * *
2024 July 6 https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/body/psoas-muscle
What does the psoas muscle do?
Your psoas muscles link your spine to your lower body and connect muscles deeper inside your body to ones closer to the surface of your skin. They’re like a bridge in the center of your body that connects lots of parts and helps you perform motions that use your abdomen and legs at the same time.
Your psoas muscles work with other muscles to stabilize your posture and move your hips and upper legs. Their functions include:
- Holding your lower back still when you’re sitting down.
- Pulling your abdomen up from a prone position (picture doing a sit-up).
- Helping you flex and move your hips when you’re standing and lying down.
- Lifting your upper legs (which lets you walk and climb stairs).
- Stabilizing the top of your femur (thigh bone) when you move your hips.

This month, the writer who is supplying inspiration is Mr. George Carlin.
About humanity… he said that if there were only ten people, dropped off onto this planet… the ten people would ask each other:
“Is every body okay?” “Let’s get something to eat.” “That’s what any society says, but we don’t. Property rights over people’s rights.”

– a story about how female youth and perceived physical beauty is a convenience in this particular society, and, the invention of a stretchy fabric for bathing suits which turns out to be invisible on photographs and live television. I wonder how many bathing suits will be in the garbage when women realize that while the fabric “shapes and contains” their body, photographs of their body fat and skin compressed and redistributed might be perceived as the opposite of beauty. A fun and clever script.

2021 November 12, 13, 14, 20; Nov 21, 07:00-07:30 (wild winds), 13:00-13:40 — Berkeley, California – Blog post #610
What was screenwriter / screenwriting teacher Terrel Seltzer’s mantra? Her simple and powerful question at the beginning of class:
“What makes a story?”
The answer: “Someone we care about wants something badly and is having a terrible time getting it.”
Someone we care about (the protagonist or another character) wants something badly and is having a terrible time getting it.

As I compose this blog post … I am thinking about the precious people and the 4-legged kids in my life, past and present. What do I want in the midst of COVID-19 pandemic? I want resources to wellness for everyone in this world. Two books have helped millions of people, including me and the people in my life.
Dr. Norman Doidge’s first book
The Brain That Changes Itself: Stories of Personal Triumph from the Frontiers of Brain Science
Dr. Norman Doidge’s second book
The Brain’s Way of Healing: Remarkable Discoveries and Recoveries from the Frontiers of Neuroplasticity
Chapter titles in both books are in this blog post – below.
* * * * * * * * * * *
I am thinking about Vicki Weiland (developmental editor). Women’s National Book Association had brought this vibrant spirit into our lives when we were board members at the San Francisco chapter.
Vicki’s life became severely difficult when illness appeared; diagnosis was not immediate. Guillain-Barre syndrome.
https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/guillain-barre-syndrome/symptoms-causes/syc-20362793 says:
“Guillain-Barre (gee-YAH-buh-RAY) syndrome is a rare disorder in which your body’s immune system attacks your nerves. Weakness and tingling in your extremities are usually the first symptoms.” …. “Although most people recover from Guillain-Barre syndrome, the mortality rate is 4% to 7%.”
What did dear Vicki want the last ten years of her life? What did we, who loved her, want for her? Restored health!
Vicki wanted the pain to go away (often 10 on the scale)… to go away through organic paths. She wanted NOT to suffer other symptoms caused by side effects of prescribed drugs. By the time Vicki tried the healing modalities described in Dr. Norman Doidge’s books (including laser light treatments which alleviated pain in parts of her body) … her system had already been overwhelmed by the years of prescriptions that only “tricked” her Beautiful Brain (“BB”) for short periods of time while pain pathways hijacked other brain functions - impacting emotions, problem-solving, memory, creativity ….
Our precious friend died in June this year 2021.

Brain map below is from the workbook TRANSFORMING THE BRAIN IN PAIN: NEUROPLASTIC TRANSFORMATION
written by Michael H. Moskowitz, MD & Marla D. Golden, DO
Who is Dr. Michael Moskowitz? He is “Physician Hurt, Then Heal Thyself: Michael Moskowitz Discovers That Chronic Pain Can Be Unlearned” which is Chapter 1 in Dr. Norman Doidge’s second book.
* * * * * * * * * * *
I am thinking about Dr. Danielle Rosenman who opened a new world to me when she coached me to retrain beautiful brain last year and led me to the workbook written by Dr. Michael Moskowitz and Dr. Marla Golden. Thank you, Steven Falk (Dr. Rosenman’s husband), for sharing wonderful news that Dr. Rosenman’s own health is improving. May Dr. Rosenman continue to get stronger and stronger, on her way to complete wellness soon!
I am thinking about my mentor author Lynn Scott (author of A Joyful Encounter: My Mother, My Alzheimer Clients, and Me) who taught me the meaning of courage and compassion. Lynn says she is experiencing more symptoms in her illness. I’m thinking about Lynn’s housemate Bob who had a heart attack and is in the hospital; I’m thinking about Lynn’s friend Diana who has cancer.
I am thinking about Maxine Hong Kingston – the author who taught me self-forgiveness through her book The Woman Warrior: Memoirs of a Girlhood Among Ghosts and also inspired me to use the written word to speak up (through the birth of my novel Love Made of Heart ). Maxine’s words have been godsend every since Dr. Susan Thackrey (San Francisco) advised me to read THE WOMAN WARRIORaround 1985.
I want for everyone new vitality! That’s what I want!
I am thinking about Kristiane McKee Maas (longhorn cattle rancher and creator of beautiful events), artist, curator, and founder of A Place of Her Own Cynthia Tom, artist and author Gale Henshel (her book is Dyslexia, My Gift, My Story), Lakshmi Hannah Kerner, author Mahyar A. Amouzegar (his novels - A Dark Sunny Afternoon; Dinner at 10:32; Pisgah Road), author Geneva “Neva” Dinwiddie (Sister Hold My Hand: Together We Stand) who is primary caregiver to her spouse, and LaH who is grieving loss of precious kittie Gracie.
I am thinking about these dear folks and other friends and other mentors and mentees … who are dealing with loss of health or loss of relationships.
Addendum:
November 22 morning – I just read email from dear Madame Hamou in France. I must tell Madame Hamou about Dr. Doidge’s books – translated into French and other languages. May Madame Hamou continue to get stronger and stronger, on her way to complete wellness soon.
Chi Nei Tsang practitioner Marie-Christine Cornet is now in France http://www.mariechristinecornet.com/
I want for everyone new vitality! That’s what I want!

November 12 and 13, 2021 , I am running the movie THE SIXTH SENSE(written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan). And to think I didn’t want to watch this movie when brilliant screenwriter / teacher Terrel Seltzer polled the class. The mother character Lynn Sear (portrayed by Toni Collette) is the most memorable element for me. What did Lynn want for her 9-year-old son Cole? What did Cole (portrayed by Haley Joel Osment) want, actually, what didn’t he want? What did Dr. Malcolm Crowe (portrayed by Bruce Willis) want? What did his wife Anna (portrayed by Olivia Williams) want? What did the other characters (whom only Cole could see) want?
* * * * * * * * * * *
I want wellness. For myself. For everyone.

Dear Reader,
I send you wishes of wellness, lasting wellness of deep peace. Over the decades, I have been fortunate to gain knowledge and skills from generous folks who shared secrets to the “good” life.
If you are a friend reading this blog post … I thank you for your emails, physical mail, text messages, voicemails, well wishes, lovely thoughts and prayers.
So many books have enriched my life … 3 books have been especially healing for me these past months as I continue to learn how to move away from persistent unpleasant sensations (including pain signals) that began last year after an episode of Shingles.
Therefore, as a fellow sojourner during this world pandemic … I am dreaming of Paris, retraining Beautiful Brain, understanding this neurological disorder, reading and getting inspired by Elisabeth Tova Bailey’s snail, Diane LeBow’s dancing, and Gilles Marin’s Taoist approach to healing.
Book by Gilles Marin

Book by Elisabeth Tova Bailey
The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating
ELISABETH TOVA BAILEY’s natural history/memoir, The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating, recounts her year-long observations of a wild Maine woodland snail. The true story of her interspecies relationship is reaching a general international audience of both genders and all ages and is finding special homes in the fields of literature, natural history, medical humanities, and education.
https://www.elisabethtovabailey.net Elisabeth Tova Bailey tells the inspiring and intimate story of her year-long encounter with a Neohelix albolabris—a common forest snail. While an illness keeps her bedridden, Bailey watches as the snail takes up residence on her nightstand. Intrigued by its molluscan anatomy, cryptic defenses, clear decision making ability, hydraulic locomotion, and mysterious courtship activities, Bailey becomes an astute and amused observer. The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating is a remarkable journey of survival and resilience, showing us how a small part of the natural world illuminates our own human existence.
Thank you, dear Luisa Adams, author of the exquisite memoir Woven of Water https://www.rp-author.com/Adams/, for gifting me Ms. Bailey’s book.

Good day, everyone!
In Loduskia “Dusky” Pierce’s blog post entitled “Vacations, 2020″ she says:
“Since the whole world is restricted in movement right now with the Covid 19 pandemic, it seems like the perfect time to let our imagination and computer images take us away on a vacation. We’ll start with spectacular versions of more traditional vacations. Awesome nature, sometimes with housing we could only dream of getting through Airbnb. Or flying in a drone to get another perspective. Then we’ll move to oases…because why not? Online is definitely the easiest way to visit an oasis. Finally, if you are the type, you might enjoy picturing yourself accompanying some of the daring adventurers found in the last section …. ”

Dusky Pierce says:
“Mind/body approaches such as EMDR and Emotional Freedom Technique are scientifically proven methods that we might use to address trauma or deep emotional wounds.
” … therapy is not only about dealing with problems; it’s also about nurturing strengths. It’s obvious life can be challenging, even tragic. I understand that there are times when no ray of sunshine shines through the dark. In that case, we focus on coping with the problems at hand.
“I also know from my work as a therapist and in my own life that in the midst of the most difficult times, moments of respite, appreciation, love or laughter are often found.
“Thanks to an expanding body of research in how the brain works, we know it’s possible to intentionally cultivate such moments, increasing our inner resources and feelings of well-being. We can literally create new pathways in our brains that heighten our ability to notice instances of positive experience in the midst of the most trying times.”

Dear Dusky,
You have helped me turn phobias into joys, grief into insight.
And, your having Dr. Norman Doidge’s book The Brain That Changes Itself: Stories of Personal Triumph from the Frontiers of Brain Science in your waiting room which led me to finding his next book The Brain’s Way of Healing: Remarkable Discoveries and Recoveries from the Frontiers of Neuroplasticity – the stories and resources in both books helped me help my father, friends and myself.
I am forever grateful.

Acts of kindness come in countless forms, oftentimes given anonymously.
I thank all of you from the bottom of my heart.
This blog post containing images of Parc Monceau, 8th arrondissement, Paris, France is to Thank You, the benevolent angels in all realms.
Today, October 28, 2019, my plan was to walk through Parc Monceau (enter at the grand gate at Avenue Van Dyck, exit at the grand gate at Avenue Velasquez). Well, Beauty distracted me. Twenty-eight minutes later, I realized I had walked a circle.
That is what I wish for you – may Beauty be with you always – may She lead you to where you need to go or come back to.
