Dr. Kerry and her journey to becoming interested in the holistic approach to health and wellness and the preventative path to pain-free living. She says: “Natural solutions to everything. Health(y) is a choice. You Hold the Power to Heal.”

In Dr. Kerry’s first podcast… at 13 minutes and 10 seconds into the podcast … ” ….I always believed that there is a natural solution or treatment to anything having to do with the body… I truly believe that disease starts in the gut… and prevention is always the strongest medicine… what that has in common with chiropractic … is prevention”

Dr. Victoria Sweet says:

“I went to Stanford and majored in mathematics, minored in classics. I was always split between science and the humanities. Then I started a PhD program at Harvard in psychology, but realized that medicine would work better for me than basic research. Because to be a good doctor you have to be a scientific humanist and a humanistic scientist.

In one of the most riveting books on the human brain and its mystery powers ever written, Doidge addresses the role of alternative medical therapies to reset and re-sync the dynamic patterns of ‘energy’ in our brain, with the ability to restore relatively normal health to those whose fate seems hopeless.… These are people that traditional medicine all but abandoned as hopeless, untreatable. But they were rescued….It’s possible to start anywhere in the book and be mesmerized.”

He quit his 15 year job as a teacher and embraced chiropractic school so he could bring this amazing technique to others.

Along the way he mastered many other techniques, including N.I.S. (Neuro Integration System), Cold Laser Therapy, Activator, and holistic nutrition to round out his healing abilities and be able to meet each patient where they are at and move them forward.
Professor Lorimer Moseley says:

“What we now understand about pain.

“The mechanisms that cause us to change in a good way can also cause us to change in a way that makes our lives more difficult and more unpleasant.

“If you have a brain, you will experience pain. If you don’t have a brain, you won’t experience pain.

“We feel pain in our body, and, we feel it in a particular location, but, it is impossible to feel pain without a brain, and, it is completely possible to feel pain without the body part.”

Danielle Rosenman, M.D. says:

“The brain changes itself constantly throughout our entire lives. All of our experience changes the brain.

“Everything that we experience, think, feel, believe, and learn changes the physical structure of the brain, the chemicals in the brain, and electricity in the brain.

“This ability of the brain to change is called neuroplasticity.

“Neuroplasticity lets us learn through our entire lives. The more often we repeat a task, the better we learn it. Repetition helps us learn things like reading, adding numbers, or playing a musical instrument. We often call this type of learning ‘practice’.”

During neuroplasticity coaching, Dr. Danielle Rosenman instructs: “Smile for yourself and talk out loud to your brain. When you learn to talk to your brain, you are opening up a new life.”

Hi I’m Dusky. Welcome to my world of wonders.

I’m so glad to share with you some discoveries about our planet, its inhabitants and the universe that I have found to be awesome, funny, or just plain weird.

Did you know that spending time feeling appreciation or amusement is good for us? The more we purposely tune into moments of positive experience, the easier it becomes to notice them because we have literally made changes in our brain circuitry. This website is my way to immerse my brain in wondrous things.

As a psychotherapist with an office in Oakland, California and also seeing clients on Zoom, every day I’m aware of the impact that brain circuitry makes, creating our habits of mind and feelings. Learn more about my therapy practice.

Otherwise, have a great time wandering through the world’s wonders.

Enjoy!

Dear Reader,

Today I responded to a post from a fellow-member of Women’s Brain Exchange network. Her subject line was: “Recommendations for Parkinson’s”

I wish to share my response through this blog post.

I cheer for all brave folks who are coping with disease and illness and all the compassionate advocates!

I was an advocate for my father – he thrived in spite of Parkinson’s.

Information is powerful! What I had learned as an advocate enriched my own life and also everyone else’s in Papa’s community.

Be ahead of the game – know that Parkinson’s is a movement disorder… thus, find (not just a general neurologist) but a neurologist whose patient base is mainly movement disorder patients and who does not rely on “old” techniques.

Same for physical therapists – folks who aren’t trained in movement disorders caused heartaches for Papa. The right folks taught my father ways to “refresh” the brain.

RESOURCES:

Michael J. Fox Foundation https://www.michaeljfox.org/ says: “The Michael J. Fox Foundation is dedicated to finding a cure for Parkinson’s disease through an aggressively funded research agenda and to ensuring the development of improved therapies for those living with Parkinson’s today.”

Membership is free for patients and their advocates.

https://www.michaeljfox.org/

When one is not feeling well… learning new ways to improve one’s health can be overwhelming. I wish everyone compassionate advocates to help make the journey a gentler one.

Dr. Norman Doidge reminds us that WALKING helps our brain produce new brain cells – prehistoric humans and animals walked to find food and shelter, to get away from predators – the brain releases chemicals to promote movement.

While using exercise equipment helps us build strength … walking requires our Brain to make decisions… our Brain learns about our surroundings and conditions when we walk. Walk Walk Walk

Our brain releases beneficial chemicals even when the movement is imaginary. Athletes, musicians, all types of performers use “Visualization”. Mind-Body connection at work!

Who Needs Our Mighty Voices? Library patrons everywhere:

Kids who go to these safe places to read and do homework

Seniors who make communities solid

Unemployed adults using resources and the Internet for job-search

Visit: http://savethelibraries.spaces.live.com/

Example: In Oakland, CA

Elmhurst, Lakeview, Temescal, Golden Gate, Martin Luther King and Melrose branches would only open 2 or 3 days per week!

77.2% of Alameda County voters had voted YES to Measure Q to increase library hours and services, not cut them.

Time sensitive. City of Oakland is scheduled to adopt the two-year budget June 30, impacting 6 libraries.

Council members working hard to do “the right thing” by all Oakland residents. Library advocates say “Thank you!”

HOW CAN WE HELP ?

1. Attend the Library Advocacy meeting on Thursday, June 25th, 6:00PM to 8:00PM, Oakland Main Library West Auditorium (125 14th Street, Oakland)

2. Sign the on-line petition on http://savethelibraries.spaces.live.com/

3. Email or call the mayor and council members and tell them to keep all Oakland libraries open at least 5 or 6 days a week. Their names, phone numbers and email addresses listed below.

4. Bring friends and neighbors to public meetings about the proposed budget and tell City of Oakland Council Members in person. Next meeting Tuesday, June 30, 2009 Check http://savethelibraries.spaces.live.com for meeting dates/times, how to sign up to speak, and print a sign: Save the Libraries.

Background:

77.2% of Alameda County voters had voted YES to Measure Q in 2004. http://www.smartvoter.org/2004/03/02/ca/alm/meas/Q/

Let’s remind our mayor and council members that Measure Q was passed to:
(1) maintain and expand neighborhood branch library services, days, and hours; (2) maintain after school homework and tutoring programs; (3) maintain literacy and children’s programs; (4) increase librarian services to schools; (5) increase computer and technology access and (6) acquire new books and materials.

Please keep all Oakland libraries open 5 or 6 days a week!
