Blog is the abbreviation for weblog (a blog is a website which provides opportunities for readers to submit their comments)
Verb: To blog = to write posts (entries) in, add material to, or maintain a weblog.
Noun: A blog = a shared on-line journal where you can publish your posts (entries about your experiences, observations, expertise, and hobbies); the most recently published post appears first to readers; readers can interact by submitting comments.
Examples:
This post you’re reading is on my blog which is on my website http://lovemadeofheart.com/ (I own this site; I have to pay for domain name renewals and web hosting services)
I have a second blog (free from WordPress.com ) http://writingcoachteresa.wordpress.com/ to show my clients how a free blog works.
I have a third blog http://www.redroom.com/author/teresa-leyung-ryan at Red Room http://redroom.com/ (a wonderful website where authors can sign up to receive a webpage as a Red Room Author). However, I don’t own this blog either.
To get comfortable submitting comments to blogs, click on the title of a post on my blog (in order to see the entire post); scroll down to get the comment boxes. Go to: http://lovemadeofheart.com/ Click on “TERESA’S BLOG” and scroll down your screen; choose a post that interests you; click on the title of the post to get the comment box.
I’d encourage any writer who do not have a blog website to get one so that you’ll have an on-line address/URL. These days, a blog serves as an answering center (give your fans a chance to find you and to communicate with you and still offers you privacy). If money is an issue, then get a free blog from http://wordpress.com . Because WordPress.com blogs are free, they will not offer you the features you’d get on a blog website that you own. Although you could upgrade your free blog by paying fees to get extra features. If you go with a free blog now, and, later when you get your own website, ask your webmaster to help you import your posts from the free blog to your site. If you need a guru of a webmaster, check out Linda Lee at http://askmepc.com/
Your blog = a body of work that you publish on cyberspace.
After you get a blog and write some posts, remember to copy the keywords and key phrases (tags) in each post and add them to the tag box for each post. Your blog will compile a list of your tags. Help search engines help people find you and your work through the tags.
Visit my blog often to learn how I use tags and links in my posts. http://lovemadeofheart.com/
After you submit a comment to one of my posts, wait a day or so before going to Google (or another search engine), then key in a string of words (tags) you used in your comment . . . press the “search” key . . . let cyberspace go to work. Voila! This is how people will find you. I’ll tell you more in my workbook Build Your Writer’s Platform & Fanbase In 22 Days: Attract Agents, Editors, Publishers, Readers, and Media Attention NOW .

Hi Teresa,
I have spent my life working both physically and spiritually with dogs and other animals as a groomer, trainer, vet tech, and Animal Reiki Master, something I love to write about. I try each day to facilitate a closer relationship between my readers and their animals, while opening their mind to the deeper spiritual nature of these wonderful creatures. All while spinning a story that is both fun and unique. Thank you so much for Build Your Writer’s Platform and Fanbase in 22 Days. It is fun and easy to use, and such a necessity for those of us who are by no means up to the minute technologically. :0)

Hi Teresa-
I am an ex-professional ballet dancer (Miami City Ballet, San Francisco Ballet) and am putting the final edits on a YA novel about a teenage ballerina who desperately wants to escape Suburbia and her dysfunctional home life by getting accepted into the School of American Ballet in New York City (where I also studied for 6 years).
I am looking to build my platform in the meantime and working with your book!

Grier Cooper
Grier,
Your website/blog http://www.griercooper.com is lovely and fun to read. Congratulations on final edits on your YA novel. Exciting! The characters in Billy Elliot (the movie) made the story memorable. I wish you the same magnitude of success.
I love helping authors 2 ways: coach them in platform-building; identify their plotlines, sub-plotlines, character development, pace, and thematic connections in their manuscripts. I enjoy editing children’s & YA novels, contemporary novels, thrillers, memoirs and anthologies. If you’d like for me to look at your first 2 double-spaced pages, I’d be delighted. No charge.

Happy New Year to you!
Coach Teresa
Hey there, Teresa, I’m attempting to follow your instructions to a tee, but then I slide around a bit. I’m grateful to have your input/insight as much of the information given here I assumed I knew. As it turns out, not so much.
I am a food/travel writer who stumbled onto a story of a French woman who endured not only the hardship of WWII as a single mother, but one who lived her life never knowing who her own father was due to being born on the last day of WWI. The novel is about love and identity losses, yet is also about the unassailable determination of a woman to rise above the stigma of ‘illegitimacy’ to raise and inspire her own family.
Carole,
What powerful themes!
After reading your first 5 pages, your query letter, and the comment in this blog post, I am convinced that you are talented, passionate, and you have what it takes to write a compelling story that will show women how to honor themselves.
Bravissima!

Hi Teresa,
Well, I finally got around to your workbook–it’s wonderful. I also found the exercise with the 3 celebrities very inspiring. I chose Suze Orman, Pema Chodron, and David Sedaris. I want to create a wall of vision/inspiration based on their success stories and whatever else comes to me through this process. I also goggled my name. It was weird to realize that there are 26 other Laura Beans out there in the world. And so far I have roughly 1.5 hits. I have a long way to go. Thanks for your enthusiasm and support.
The themes I am writing about revolve around meditation, spirituality, my relationship with myself and the world.

Hi Teresa, I’ve been blogging for a while now. Linda Lee did a terrific job of designing my site, and she migrated some content over from a fee WordPress blog I had, too. Most of what I’ve been posting lately is flash fiction, which I love doing. I’m going to publish a collection of the best ones I’ve done later this year. I also wrote a memoir, Reversible Skirt, about my childhood years; it won a silver medal in the 2011 Readers Favorite book awards. And on March 12 I posted an essay, “Some Thoughts on Sisterhood,” which I hope to expand. I’ve just begun using your workbook and look forward to doing a bang-up job of building my platform and fan base. Laura McHale Holland
Laura,
Hearty congratulations on your memoir Reversible Skirt winning a silver medal in Readers Favorite Book Awards! I cheer for your publishing your collection of flash fiction and expanding “Some Thoughts on Sisterhood” (love the theme!). Laura McHale Holland, I’m going to keep my eye on you and your platform. Please add Platform-Building & Writing Coach Teresa’s Blog to your BlogRoll Cheers from Coach Teresa LeYung-Ryan

I’m new to the world of authoring with the goal of publication, though I’ve been writing and telling stories since before I could form letters. My current project is a memoir I’m writing for an inspiring father of five and quadruple amputee, Scott Martin. Scott and I have teamed up to try to bring his story to life in a full-length book. It’s been the most amazing experience thus far and I can’t wait for it to continue. Unfortunately, we’re at that crucial point of relative inactivity, waiting to hear back from agents and publishers we queried. We’re hoping to have a short story published in the upcoming work, Chicken Soup for the Soul: The Power of Positive (expected publication Oct 2012).
To learn about Scott, how he contracted a rare case of the flesh-eating disease at 35, lost both his hands and portions of each foot, and spent nearly a month in a medically-induced coma, only to come out of it and fight his way through the rebuilding process, eventually becoming the father of five amazing, adopted children, check out our webpage at http://www.movingforwardinreverse.us. Feel free to leave a comment – we’d love to hear from you!
Take care!
Coryanne Hicks
Dear Coryanne,
Thank you for leaving me a comment to this post, which tells me you’re on Day 3 of the workbook Build Your Writer’s Platform & Fanbase In 22 Days.
Thank you for giving me your website link; I am listening to Scott Martin’s interview on KNPR from January 5, 2012. What a courageous gent!
Heroes – he and his wife adopted 5 kids!
Coryanne, I hear from Scott’s interview that he thinks the world of you as his co-author, helping him transform his manuscript. Since he is the protagonist in the memoir, please ask him to do the exercises from Day 1 and Day 2 of my workbook so that you can focus on his role models and themes.
I look forward to hearing from you again.
Cheering for you both!
Sincerely,
Coach Teresa LeYung-Ryan

I decided to purchase your book in e-kindle format and I decided to try and help build my writer’s platform. My works are skimmed in the Adult genres of science fiction, fantasy and parnormal. I’m currently reading your book and I am enjoying it. I’m currently working on my two blogs and pulling together an anthology of my short stories. I’ve created two blogs which I should try and post more to:

I really looking forward to building my fan base and I thank you for publishing this book.

Writing Coach Teresa says: “Platform-Building Is Fun For Writers, Friends, Fans.”
http://lovemadeofheart.com/blog/writing-coach-teresa-says-platform-building-is-fun-for-writers-friends-fans/
I have written a novel about how we live out ancient myths in our everyday, modern life. My novel, How Far to Heaven, includes many issues and points of interest of which I am passionate about including environmentalism and our relationship to this planet Earth, women’s spirituality, tarot, Eugene, Oregon in particular and the Pacific Northwest in general, coming out as a lesbian, and Jungian psychology.
I hope to express life in my writing as it is–messy, beautiful, painful, joyful–in a way that helps people to think more deeply about what it means to be here as a human.
Thanks for reading,
Kathleen Leonard
Dear Kathleen Leonard,
Wow! You “tags” certainly hook attention.
How Far to Heaven;
environmentalism;
our relationship to this planet Earth;
women’s spirituality;
tarot;
Eugene; Oregon; Pacific Northwest;
coming out as a lesbian;
Jungian psychology;
what it means to be here as a human;
mythology
For “ancient myths” let us know which myths from which parts of the planet. What were the beliefs of the native people in the Pacific Northwest region before people from other continents arrived? What is the origin and symbolism of names of places (Eugene; Oregon)?
I recommend your reviewing Lydia Kwa’s novels. Here’s her page on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Lydia-Kwa/e/B001JRXT7O/ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_3?qid=1354388472&sr=1-3 Please ask your library to acquire one or all three of her novels.
Kathleen, please check-in again as you travel on your platform-building road.
I’m cheering for you and your novel!

Dear Teresa,
I am enjoying working through your “22 Days” workbook. I resisted the 3 celebrities exercise but finally chose Meryl Streep, Ben Franklin and George Martin, and to my surprise, I realized that I did have something in common with them: integrity, wisdom and an understanding of the importance of action.
I have completed a parenting book, “Walk With Me: A Companion and Guide for Parents.” In it, I uncover, with compassion, the fears and assumptions that so many parents find blocking their way, and I provide a simple road map that all parents can use to find their own way (the map relies heavily on a parent’s integrity and action!!)
Agents and others say that my book is beautifully written, but because I have no platform, they will not consider publishing it. My blog, Beacon, is a collection of stories from my family life and essays about parenting, education, home schooling, bullying and more. I hope to show readers who I am and give them a window into how my road map has guided my parenting journey.
I am currently working on a memoir about about raising and home schooling my children in rural Montana.
I appreciate your help and encouragement with developing a fan base.
Sincerely,
Lea Page
Dear Lea,

Please subscribe to my blog http://lovemadeofheart.com/blog/ to receive more resources for platform and fanbase-building the fun way.

I am in the final touch-up stages of publishing my book called Building Up. Its a non-fiction, self-help type of workbook designed to help people dealing with loss and grief, to overcome negative thinking. It draws on my own experiences as a mother, teacher, single-parent and depression survivor. My primary message is one of hope; that dealing with anxiety and depression isn’t something to be ashamed of or bowled-over by; that they needn’t rule your life! I then go on to outline 15 daily behaviours I use to combat negative thoughts. I embody what I’ve written about and hope that others will be inspired by it!

Happy Platform & Fanbase Fortifying!
Sincerely,
Coach Teresa LeYung-Ryan
Hi Teresa,
I recently bought your book, Build Your Writer’s Platform & Fanbase in 22 Days and am working the exercises. I had a blog for a couple of years but I hated doing it. I never found enough time to write posts. I’m a full time elementary school teacher, novelist working on her 5th book, and peace consultant helping teachers stop bullying. I used to try to do social media more but found it was taking up my precious novel writing time. I am very busy and don’t know that I have time for blogging. Still I want to build fans for my Artania, Forest Secrets, and Dean and JoJo novels.
Dear Teresa,
Thank you for the ideas in your book. I am enjoying the exercises and although I may not blog anymore but I do have a website with peace-building activities for parents, teachers, children and others who want to help stop bullying or learn about my book. I also periodically add events I am a part of to my artania.net website. I have Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook, and Linked-in accounts that I post on regularly.
I have focused on bettering my craft these past 10 years much more than marketing partially because I not only want to share my best work but also because I’m a bit shy about tooting my own horn. That’s why blogging was hard for me: I couldn’t find an authentic voice.
I’m going to keep up with the exercises and will give it try again.
Thanks for the tips!

It’s our last day at the San Francisco Writers Conference (SFWriters.org) and we don’t want it to be over! It was a pleasure to meet you here. I’m ridiculously excited to be going through your workbook “Build Your Writer’s Platform & Fanbase in 22 Days”! We’re on day 3, and holding strong.
My new work, Three Tiers, is a Young Adult Space Opera. I’ve been calling it “Romeo and Juliet in space” but with a happier ending!
Hopefully Diana Lynn and I will be able to come out to Half Moon Bay for your editing class with Mary Knippel. We would love to keep in touch, to learn, to share and to support one another!

Diana Lynn
Dear author Missy Kirtley,
I am SO HAPPY to hear that you and Diana are on day 3 of my workbook and holding strong!
I love the premise of your new book project entitled Three Tiers — a Young Adult (Y/A) Space Opera – Romeo and Juliet in space but with a happier ending!
Could it be that you have a trilogy? The words (tags) in your book title have many significant associations – 3 steps; 3 tears; the number 3 in Nature; the Trinity (from Latin trinitas “triad”); number of sides in a triangle; 3′s a crowd; the book title The Three Musketeers . . . Wow! Powerful allusions / symbolism!
Happy blogging/tagging, vibrant author Missy Kirtley! http://blog.missykirtley.com
May millions of new fans find you through tags synonymous with your name!
I cheer for you!
May the force be with you!

Merriam-Webster’s definitions of self-recognition – #2 is interesting!
1 : recognition of one’s own self

I write science fiction and fantasy. There are no (intentional) deep messages or meanings. They’re stories that I have to write, tales that I feel I have to tell. I thought when I began there was only going to be one book. My wife knew better and told me so.
And she was right.

I am a garden coach. I discovered when a gardener for Sunset Magazine that I liked giving garden tours. Now I have the best job. I walk people through their gardens and teach them how to garden better. Being self employed is a challenge but quite rewarding as well.
I write a column for the Palo Alto Weekly and had one in the Coast Views Magazine until they closed the business. Writing a monthly column is fun and challenging. It also gets me some business but still after 15 years, not enough. Now I would like to collect my columns and put them together in a book. I look forward to continuing through the book “Build your Writers Platform”. It’s day three and I’ve already hit one task I didn’t understand. But am not discouraged.
Thanks Teresa
