On October 21, 2015, I had published my blog post entitled “The Brain’s Way of Healing – Chapter Titles and Index in Book Spark Hope and Motivation to Ask Physicians the Right Questions As my family members and friends know, what I had learned from Dr. Doidge’s books helped me help my papa.

While loved ones who are ill or have diseases and do not have the energy to read and process the valuable information, WE do, and WE can help them and ourselves.

Knowledge that leads to health and wellness – this is my wish for everyone.

Dr. Doidge’s books are most engaging- I learned from the stories – I did NOT have to look up medical terms; the footnotes were equally engaging.

You have friends who have had . . . Strokes? Chronic pain? Suffering from symptoms of MS? Cerebral Palsy? Muscular Dystrophy? Alzheimer’s? Parkinson’s? Head injury? Balance problems? Vision problems? Depression?

Dear friend and colleague Elisa Sasa Southard was the one who taught me about hooking attention with no more than 3 talking points in a speech. Here are mine for this post. I (Teresa LeYung-Ryan) learned that the awesome brain refreshes itself which leads to healing… with a little help from us:

* LIGHT – sit in direct natural light (approximately 20 minutes a day). Florence Nightingale who established the first professional training school for nurses, Sister J. Ward who was in charge of preemies in a hospital in Essex, England, Soranus of Ephesus (physician in imperial Rome) – they knew about the healing power of natural light. The Romans had a law “right to light” which guaranteed people’s access to the sun in their homes.

* SELF IMAGE – look at a photograph of yourself (a photo reminiscent of a time when you felt vital) OR create that picture in your mind’s eyes – athletes and musicians know the benefits of visualization as a way of training

* SOUND – sing the songs from your past (a time when you felt vital) Sara Davidson’s April 23, 2009 article “The Songs They Can’t Forget” for The New York Times – The New Old Age – Caring and Coping Blog inspired me to publish my blog post of July 2 (with a P.S. on July 18), 2017 Dementia. Alzheimer’s. Losing Memory. Losing Joy. Songs from the Past. Experience Joy Again.

Our amazing brains! Help our brains “rewire” (I say “refresh”) to enjoy life. Help the people we care about.

January 16, 2016

Dear Writers and Readers,

Thank you for reading.

This is an intermission in Writing Coach Teresa’s “Parkinson’s Disease, My Chinese Papa, and My practicing The Four Agreements” blog post series.

This post is about my courageous cousins.

My 42-year-old cousin is dying of metastasized colon cancer. I wish to speak up for her and another young woman who died three years ago.

Even though the medical world says 50 is the age to get a baseline colonoscopy . . . there are people under age 50 who would be alive today if they got tested much earlier.

According to Mayo Clinic http://www.mayoclinic.org

What is your risk level?

Your risk of colon cancer might influence your choice of screening tests. If you have an increased risk of colon cancer, your doctor might recommend more frequent colon cancer screening with colonoscopy.

Talk to your doctor about your colon cancer risk if you:

Have a personal history of colon cancer or precancerous polyps

Have a parent, sibling or child who has had colon cancer

Carry a gene for a hereditary colon cancer syndrome

Have a history of inflammatory bowel disease, such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease

Cousin Anna started rejecting food over three weeks ago. The purple and black marks on her skin are signs of liver failure. Hospice nurse tells my aunt and uncle and cousins that their daughter/sister will be leaving soon.

Anna’s siblings have been her loyal advocates; they too need moral support now.

While witnessing Anna’s journey, I see how my relatives practice The Work (as Byron Katie would say) - taking care of what is in front of us, with grace.

Anna herself is doing The Work – She calls out for her brother (who has been her primary caregiver; what a loving caregiver) when she wants to drink water from her stainless steel cup, change position in her bed, or merely see him in the room.

Anna’s loving brother is doing The Work – He has set up a station (including info packet and supplies from hospice care) outside Anna’s room; he supervises as well as provide excellent care when he is home; he goes to his new job in San Francisco.

Anna’s adoring sister is doing The Work – She flew in to be with her sister, meet the hospice nurse, orchestrate delivery of a hospital bed, shopped, made phone calls, and comforted her parents; then she flew back home to take care of her own family.

Anna’s sister-in-law is doing The Work – She has been there, is there, to give everyone moral support.

Anna’s mother and father provide food and tea for us all. We eat in silence.

January 29, 2016

Cousin Anna died in the early morning of January 21st. Rain had stopped. We even had blue sky. A new angel on her way.

Please listen to what your body tells you. The statement “You’re too young to be tested” is just someone’s opinion. Be your own advocate. After all, you are the expert of your experiences.

Sincerely,

Dear Writers/Caregivers/Advocates for Loved Ones,

Coach Teresa LeYung-Ryan here . . . I see how helping a loved one/being an advocate is so much like writing a book.

My papa has been diagnosed with Parkinsonism by his neurologist. If Papa is telling his story, he would be the first-person narrator; if I’m telling the story about him, then I would be the third-person narrator.

A book (story) consists of one main character (also known as “hero” or “protagonist”) or multiple main characters and other characters (other archetypes), a subject matter that is discussed repeatedly (“theme”) and at least one plotline (“what happened?”). The merging of these elements helps the writer show the hero’s journey.

Helping a loved one/being an advocate consists of at least 2 protagonists (YOU and the loved one) and other archetypes (physicians, healthcare and social service providers, other family members and friends, neighbors, coworkers, vendors, . . . the stranger who gives up her/his seat on the train for you), themes (the cause for help and advocacy and the related issues), and plotlines (the interconnected events associated with all the characters). Who will be the most transformed in the story? The loved one? You the caregiver/advocate? The person who is most transformed would be the main character/hero/protagonist. Perhaps both people will go through great transformation. Two protagonists!

I am writing – I keep a notebook for whenever I visit my papa or when I do something on his behalf- gosh, there are so many little “subplots” to keep track of! (Is this Papa’s third or last session with the physical therapist? Mary and I need to witness the exercises so that when the P.T. closes the case, we would be able to coach Papa. Did he say he wanted another heating pad? Oh my, there are at least 18 model to choose from. Gotta review friends’ advice about what is a comfortable bed and also Consumer Reports. Then Papa has to “test drive” some beds. You just can’t shop for a mattress the way you shop for a pair of shoes.

MATTRESS SHOPPING TIPS (from Sealy’s website)

Plan to spend at least one hour in the store.

Wear loose clothing and easily removable shoes.

Test out mattresses in groups of three for easier comparison.

Lie on each mattress for 5 to 15 minutes to let it fully adapt to your body.

Don’t feel rushed. It’s ok to ask for privacy.

I would add: Bring your own pillow so that your neck is supported while trying out mattresses; maybe bring an extra pillow case too.

And, I am reading the book The Brain’s Way of Healing: Remarkable Discoveries and Recoveries from the Frontiers of Neuroplasticity by Norman Doidge, M.D. Chapter 2 is titled “A Man Walks Off His Parkinsonian Symptoms” . . . how John Pepper has been able to reverse the major symptoms, the ones that Parkinson’s patients dread most, those that lead to immobility. He’s done so with an exercise program he devised and with a special kind of concentration . . .

All the “characters” in Dr. Doidge’s books (The Brain’s Way of Healing and The Brain that Changes Itself: Stories of Personal Triumph from the Frontiers of Brain Science) and in Dr. Victoria Sweet‘s book (God’s Hotel: A Doctor, a Hospital, and a Pilgrimage to the Heart of Medicine) are guiding me on my journey as an advocate for my father. And, I just know that my mom plays a huge role in helping me.

I thank everyone who has given me her/his time, energy, and prayers.

Here are links to websites I’ve relied on lately:

“Due to illness, I had to miss the ‘Writers Helping Writers’ panel on the Literary Stage with colleagues on June 6, 2015.

Thank you, Chris Philpot, for letting me know about the links (on my resources page for writers) that needed updating. Click here for Writing Coach Teresa’s webpage “Resources for Writers”

Your generosity is much appreciated. What a nice reminder for this message:

In my workbook Build Your Writer’s Platform & Fanbase In 22 Days, I provide website links/addresses (URLs) to organizations. When website administrators of organizations change their URLS or even delete their webpages, you and I have no control over that. Go to your favorite search engine (Mozilla Firefox; Internet Explorer; Safari; etc.), type what you are searching for in the [search box] and press your enter key. Example: I’m looking for Carmen Lee’s organization and her website. I don’t have the full name of her organizations; I do remember that she advocates speaking up on mental illness and stigmas. So, I type Carmen Lee, mental illness, stigmas, website into the search engine’s search box and press my enter key. Voila! http://www.stampoutstigma.net

The above keywords shown in bold font are called “tags” (tags help us find webpages the way indexes help us find the pages or books containing the keywords we are looking for); use commas to separate tags). And, through the exercises in my workbook, you’ll learn even more ways to find organizations and their URLs; so, use your research skills gained from the workbook and have fun.

To writers and readers, if you are near the UK or have friends in the UK, please tell them about http://www.buy-stationery.co.uk Cheers to Chris!

Please bring the current draft of your manuscript. In this 6-hour class, you will learn how to edit your work by examining vital elements in story-weaving:

What does my Protagonist really want?

Who or What is the Antagonist?

What are the top 3 themes in my story?

How does WHAT my Protagonist wants connect with my main theme?

How do all the other characters, especially the Antagonist, contribute toward my main theme?

How to infuse authentic details into recurring themes?

Master these tools and transform your manuscript into a page-turner and memorable read.

Everyone will be given the opportunity to read passages from their manuscripts out loud on Day 1 and Day 2 and receive evaluations so that all participants will gain from Mary’s and Teresa’s expertise. Learn how to “stay on course, theme-wise” during rewrites as well as create a succinct pitch when anyone asks you “What is your book about?”
