Build Your Name, Beat the Game: Be Happily Published
March 23, 2010
Dear Anne M. Baxter,
Thank you for taking photos for me at California Writers Club. And for following up by submitting your comments to my blog.
For your children’s books, I recommend the talented agents at Andrea Brown Literary Agency http://andreabrownlit.com/agents.php
I saw Laura Rennert at the San Francisco Writers Conference in February when she and Robert San Souci http://www.rsansouci.com/ were on the same panel. I’m a big fan of Robert’s children’s books; and, if I were writing children’s books, I would be honored to be represented by Laura Rennert (she is agent and author) http://www.laurajoyrennert.com/
To identify prospective agents or acquisition editors for your historical novels for adults, read acknowledgment pages of your favorite historical novels (authors usually thank these folks); also go to: Association of Authors’ Representatives “AAR” to find agents for specific genres http://aaronline.org/Find
Use search engines to find authors’ interviews; after you find names of agents or acquisition editors, use search engines again to find their websites; then study their submission guidelines.

I’ll be glad to answer questions at any of my events. I’m also available for private coaching or group-coaching if you round up 2 or 3 colleagues.
Cheering for you and your books!

Dear Mary Knippel http://openuptoyourcreativity.com/,
Thank you for an empowering day (Saturday, January 30, 2010) at the Creativity Workshop for Women’s National Book Association.
I had a good time with the dozen fellow writers as you led us in “Decide, Declare, Design Your writing life for 2010!”
I’m a writing career coach who helps my clients build their names/platforms by identifying the themes in their books (pre and post publication). I thought I would put all my energy in promoting my new workbook the first half of this year. Not. While creating my vision board at your workshop, the message [ that I need to continue using my novel Love Made of Heart to shed light on stigmas on mental illness ] appeared “loudly and clearly” in words and pictures. My new mission statement: I, Teresa LeYung Ryan, use my novel to shed light on the secret agonies suffered by women with mental illness.
Thank you, Mary and WNBA colleagues!
Sincerely,
Teresa LeYung Ryan

My friend and colleague Elisa Southard and I met on Wednesday to outline our presentation for the San Francisco Writers Conference in February.
Conference registrants have described us as “The Elisa & Teresa Show” because we do skits to demonstrate our points, and, our sessions are always interactive.“Writing-Career Coach Teresa & Talking-Tagline Coach Elisa Southard love helping authors hook attention from agents and publishers.”
This year, SFWC creators Elizabeth Pomada & Michael Larsen want us to present: UPPING YOUR PLATFORM: Building Your Visibility Online and Off with YOUR Talking Tagline.
Fun! As a pre-conference exercise, I ask registrants to Google our names and see what our talking-taglines are.
Elisa Southard IS the Talking-Tagline Queen and the author of Break Through the Noise: 9 Tools to Propel Your Marketing Message.
She’s my coach when I need to hook attention. She even dreamed up the main part of the title of my new guide ! Build Your Name, Beat the Game. What a gift! Thank you, Elisa!
Elisa’s working on a new book herself. Meanwhile I’d like to remind all writers (and anyone who has a service to provide) to visit her website. http://breakthroughthenoise.com/
Elisa is often quoted as saying, “Don’t kill a marketing moment, execute it.”
Happy New Year, Elisa! And Happy Writing your new book!
Sincerely,
Teresa
In a few hours, 2009 will click into 2010. I wish everyone on this planet a safe home, nourishing food, clean water, sunshine, caring neighbors, and joyful hearts, mind, body, and spirit to be caregivers to all living things.
To writers, I wish abundant energy to work, self-confidence, and compassion to self and others.
And that goes for me too.
Sincerely,
Teresa LeYung Ryan

- coach you in name-building to attract the right agent or publisher
- guide you in designing and growing your blog (to showcase your expertise and experiences)
- show you computer-navigating shortcuts and how to easily “find stuff” on the World Wide Web
- edit your manuscript, 22 pages at a time so that you can gain tools with each installment

Encourage writer-friends who are in the Belmont, CA area to attend the California Writers Club-SF Peninsula Branch meeting.
Teresa LeYung Ryan to present: “Build Your Name While You Write”
Can you relate to any one of these statements?
* Agents and acquisition editors say publishers prefer to work with authors who are already celebrities or have established platforms (i.e. means to build fan base). How do I compete?
* I am published. There aren’t enough hours in a day to write, let alone run around and network.
* I believe in my writing and I’m committed to building my career, but, my budget is limited.
Teresa LeYung Ryan says: “You are the expert of your experiences whether you’re writing fiction or non-fiction. When you make your name synonymous with the themes/subject matters/issues in your writing, you’re building your career/platform. Come to the January 2010 meeting.” More Info & Registration: http://cwc-peninsula.org/

This is the speech by author Teresa LeYung Ryan at the 2009 San Francisco Writers Conference:
What is fortitude? Strength of mind that enables One to encounter adversity with courage.
Of the 12 animals on the Chinese zodiac, the Ox embodies that trait. Fortitude. 18 days ago, we entered a new lunar calendar year. The Year of the Ox.
The story goes like this:
When the Buddha invited all of the animals-in-creation to come to him, the Ox was the second to arrive. He was beaten only through the cunning of the Rat who had made the journey riding on the Ox’s back and then hopping off last minute. But the Ox arrived ahead of all the other animals for one simple reason….the Buddha had called him.
We -the presenters, the volunteers, the sponsors, vendors, the board members of the San Francisco Writers Conference, BookShop West Portal, and the Women’s National Book Association-we have arrived for the simple reason . . . that Michael & Elizabeth and Barbara & Linda have called on us.
We are here to help you on your writer’s journey. In this industry, we can’t all get there first, but, through perseverance, we can make our dreams come true.
My co-presenter Elisa Southard and I have 3 wishes for you:
- that you’ll have fun while learning this weekend;
- that you’ll make new friends and help each other; and
- after the conference when you’re home working on the craft, that you will summon the Ox and hear him say to you: “Prosperity shall be yours through hard work and fortitude.”
