Hello, Everyone!  /  Bonjour à tous !

Every day I get reminders to share resources / Chaque jour, on me rappelle de partager mes ressources.

Help your beautiful brain help the entire body / Aidez votre merveilleux cerveau à  prendre soin de tout votre corps

[ Thank you, Linguee DeepL Translator / Merci beaucoup, Linguee DeepL Translator ]

Perhaps you are helping someone who is too ill to read about the latest findings from doctors, patients, and scientists who are helping people around the world understand neuroplasticity.  Neuroplasticity is the word to describe the brain’s ability to learn and adapt… that the brain changes itself…and, we can help the brain change in ways that benefit the entire body, especially after an illness or injury.

Here are a few tricks to help your loved one … to help the brain help the entire body.

I learned them from the physicians and patients chronicled in books written by Norman Doidge, M.D., Danielle Rosenman, M.D., workbook and webinars from Dr. Michael Moskowitz and Dr. Marla Golden, my papa’s neurologists, physical therapist who was trained in movement disorder, and the folks at the UCSF Movement Disorders and Neuromodulation Center in San Francisco, California.

1.    Show your loved one photos of herself/himself when she/he was most vibrant. Tell your loved one that looking at photos and movies of the “Vibrant Self” isn’t vanity; the magnificent Brain needs visual cues to transmit messages at the cellular level.

Perhaps her/his cell phone wallpaper is a photo of children/grandchildren/a pet? Find a photo of her/him with the other people and ask her/him to make that photo the phone wallpaper. What better way for the Brain to “see” One’s vibrant self.

Perhaps you prefer to print a photo or photos.

Ask family members and friends to text-message photos to the person who would benefit from seeing her/his vibrant self.

2.     Smile at the person who is ill. Ask family members and friends to smile at her/him. Even when talking on the phone… when you are smiling…the person you are talking to will “hear” your smile.

Why smile at a person? When you smile… the other person might smile too. Even when the person cannot smile with ease right now (after a stroke)… her/his Brain will interpret the smiles as instructions to produce endorphins and dopamine.

“Smiling and Brain Chemicals: The Science Behind Your Happy Face” NeuroLaunch editorial team August 22, 2024 … The simple act of smiling, whether genuine or forced, can set off a cascade of neurochemical reactions that profoundly influence our mood and overall well-being…. At the heart of this chemical symphony are two key players: endorphins and dopamine. These neurotransmitters, often referred to as “feel-good” chemicals, play crucial roles in regulating our emotions, motivation, and pleasure responses. While we often associate their release with more intense activities like exercise or thrilling experiences, mounting evidence suggests that the humble smile might be a powerful trigger for these mood-enhancing molecules….

If the person who is ill says “What’s there to smile about?” Tell her/him that her/his beautiful Brain interpret smiling (even the thought of smiling) is natural medicine.  Smiling, looking at photos of One’s vibrant self, thinking about One’s vibrant self … all sweet elixirs for beautiful Brain.

Danielle Rosenman, M.D. says:

“The brain changes itself constantly throughout our entire lives. All of our experience changes the brain.

“Everything that we experience, think, feel, believe, and learn changes the physical structure of the brain, the chemicals in the brain, and electricity in the brain.

“This ability of the brain to change is called neuroplasticity.

“Neuroplasticity lets us learn through our entire lives.  The more often we repeat a task, the better we learn it. Repetition helps us learn things like reading, adding numbers, or playing a musical instrument. We often call this type of learning ‘practice’.”

During neuroplasticity coaching, Dr. Danielle Rosenman instructs:  “Smile for yourself and talk out loud to your brain. When you learn to talk to your brain, you are opening up a new life.”
