Build My Name, Beat the Game: 22 Days to Identify & Develop My Writer’s Platform to Attract Agents, Acquisition Editors, Publishers, Readers, and Media Attention

A Week of Wearing 3 Hats – Writing Career Coach – Author -  Publisher

As Writing Career Coach

I presented “Build My Name, Beat the Game” to delightful writers at the Redwood Writers Conference.  Writers in my session, please scroll down until you see my post/column entitled “Redwood Writers Conference Pure Joy” and follow instructions please to build your names.

There’s post-conference work for me.  I’ll email colleagues and follow up on our conversations; I’ll email writers in my session some coaching notes; I’ll pitch my workshop to other organizations.

Do you know a non-fiction writer who wants to go to a writers’  conference but can’t afford it? Encourage her/him to ask family and  friends to chip in (what better Christmas gift or birthday gift!).   Check out Writing for Change Conference.

As Author

I’m writing down “gems” as they pop into my head.  Gems in the form of dialogue, metaphors, descriptions, hooks, and story-questions.

I had a chance to chat with Martha Engber at the Redwood Writers Conference and read the jacket copy of her novel  The Wind Thief.  I started reading it when I got home Saturday night and have been reading a little everyday.  What lovely prose and sensory details! What a gifted writer.  Tanya Egan Gibson is another gifted writer; I’m also reading her novel How to Buy a Love of Reading. My reading well-written books can only make me a better writer.

As Publisher

I’m updating Build My Name, Beat the Game: 22 Days to Identify & Develop My Writer’s Platform to Attract Agents, Acquisition Editors, Publishers, Readers, and Media Attention so that I can take the next step in publishing the next edition–and that is letting Nancy Mulvany create the index.

This evening I attended a Business and Leadership program at the Commonwealth Club on “iPad Revolution and the Future of Digital Magazines” with Matthew Davis of Zinio and Matt Carlson of Hot Studio, two pioneers in this emerging field.  Kevin O’Malley, President, TechTalk/Studio was Moderator (Thank you, Kevin, for inviting me.  The program was enlightening).

Sincerely,

Teresa LeYung Ryan

Right now, please click on the blue title-bar of this post/column to get the comment boxes so that you can tell the world what your mission statement is (how you help a particular group of people with the themes/subject matters/issues in your literary work). Whether you write fiction or non-fiction, building your name is a breeze when you have your mission statement.   Here are examples . . .

(as fiction and narrative non-fiction writer)

I,Teresa LeYung Ryan, use my novel Love Made of Heart to inspire adult-children of mentally-ill parents to speak openly about the stigmas that their families suffer. My motto: Through my writing, I speak for those who cannot speak for themselves.

(as prescriptive/”how to” non-fiction writer)

I, Teresa LeYung Ryan, help writers create their mission statements with my workbook Build My Name, Beat the Game: 22 Days to Identify & Develop My Writer’s Platform to Attract Agents, Acquisition Editors, Publishers, Readers, and Media Attention. How was the pre-conference poetry evening? How was the conference?  Redwood Writers Conference was pure joy! I’ll be posting photos and more links during the week.

I cheer for all writers who want to touch lives with their words.

Colleague Margie Yee Webb told me about a fun event that happened this past Tuesday night.  I believe in post-event cheers for my colleagues.  If you’re in the Sacramento area, go meet these authors at events. What do these authors have in common?  They’re all vibrant members at the Sacramento Branch of the California Writers Club. I have worked with them (Margie Yee Webb, Steve Liddick, Bob Quinlan, Frances Kakugawa, Kiyo Sato, Susan M. Osborn) at various literary events and I think they are all delightful!  Margie, Bob, Frances and I are WNBA members

September 21, 2010-An Evening With Authors-Open to the Public

6-8 p.m. Luna’s Cafe, 1414 16th St., Sacramento, CA

These authors (they’re nice people too) read from their works and autographed books:

Bob Quinlan of Earn It: Empower Yourself for Love (Authority Publishing, $19.95, 252 pages)

Frances Kakugawa of Mosaic Moon: Caregiving Through Poetry (Watermark Publishing, $16.95, 232 pages)

Kiyo Sato of Kiyo’s Story: A Japanese-American Family’s Quest for the American Dream (Soho Press, $25, 352 pages)

Susan M. Osborn of The System Made Me Do It: A Life Changing Approach to Office Politics (Lifethread Publications, $19.95, 176 pages)

What is going on in the publishing world?  Four experts answered that question today Sept. 12, 2010 at the Women’s National Book Association event.

Picture this:  San Francisco Public Library-Main Branch, 50+ writers in the audience and a panel sharing what they know about the publishing industry.

JENNIFER JOSEPH – publisher and editor of Manic D Press
PETER BEREN – literary agent and publishing consultant
BRIDGET KINSELLA – Breaking Books & navigating the publishing landscape
GEORGIA HUGHES – editorial director of New World Library
Moderator: Mary Knippel, immediate past president, WNBA-SF Chapter

* * *
What did I learn today from the panelists?

  • Publisher Jennifer Joseph advised us to take advantage of the FaceBook phenomenon; to be true to ourselves and work on the craft.
  • Literary Agent & Publishing Consultant Peter Beren advised us to research websites that help authors promote our books (including Redroom, GoodReads, Library Thing); to really know our market; also, he reminded us that usually “noise/excitement around the event is better than the event itself.”
  • Bridget Kinsella advised us to understand that even when a book is selling well, there’s no guarantee that the publisher of that book will commit to additional print-runs.
  • Georgia Hughes advised us to conduct marketing research for our book proposals and that “a good book title goes a long way.”

Thank you, panelists!

Two dozen WNBA members were present and a dozen members (those who had arrived early and signed up) introduced their books/writings to the audience.

Thank you, Michelle Jeffers-Public Relations Officer, Daniel, Leon Veal, and everyone at San Francisco Public Library who helped us publicized today’s event.  It’s a joy working with fellow board and committee members from WNBA-SF Chapter (the sponsors of the event).  Lynn Henriksen, Kate Britton, Mary Knippel, Sarbjit Rai, Leon Veal, Leigh Anne Lindsey & yours truly, Teresa LeYung Ryan, were happy to see so many WNBA members and guests showing up for the literary community.

If you were there today, please submit your comment by clicking on the title of this blog post; tell us who you are, what you gained today from the panelists and WNBA members, and what steps you’ll be taking to enrich your writing-life.  We thank you for being there.

Sincerely,

Teresa LeYung Ryan, author, writing-career coach, founder of GraceArt Publishing

Thank you, Linda Joy Myers, for being a magnificent resource center for memoir writers!

I created this post just for you–members of NAMW.  After the June 18, 2010 Members-Only Teleseminar, let me know what steps you’ll take to further build your name to attract more fans (before or after publication). More fans lead to bigger platform/fame . . . which attracts agents / acquisition editors & publishers / advocates /endorsers / media attention . . . which leads to even more fans . . .

Remember to click “submit comment” after you have composed yours. When I receive your comment, I will add your name to this post and “tag” you (you’ll know what this means after the teleseminar).

“USE WHAT YOU KNOW TO BUILD FAME:  Fun & Simple Steps for Memoir Writers”

  • Understand the need to build one’s name/fame in today’s publishing arena.
  • Identify your advocates, endorsers and fans.
  • Gain recognition through your words and your community.

How do you thrive in the fiercely competitive industry?  You hold the power to beat the game.

Sincerely,

Author/Self-Publisher Seeks Advice from Writing Career Coach Teresa

Here’s a question from a hard-working author:

“Dear Teresa,

One of my friends is planning to publish her book.  I want her to get the best price for her money…  The main thing I’m interested in is distribution, selling online, and creating DVDs.  I would love your comments. Thank you.”   Kim

Here’s my reply:

Hi, Kim,

Amazon has a new self-publishing program:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/seller-account/mm-summary-page.html?ie=UTF8&ld=AZFooterSelfPublish&topic=200260520
Do read up on that program.

Also, 2 organizations in the Bay Area to help authors/publishers:

http://www.baipa.org/
http://www.norcalpa.org/

Even if you find a publisher that has a huge distribution channel, the challenge “how big is the author’s platform?” still exist. That’s why I wrote my workbook –to help authors build that platform before the book is published, to beat the game.

If you send your friend to http://WritingCoachTeresa.com and also tell her about Amazon Create Space program, and Bay Area Independent Publishers Association, and Northern California Publishers & Authors, then she’ll be armed with resources.

I want you to be armed too (and have fun).

Sincerely,

Writing Career Coach Teresa LeYung Ryan
