August 21, 2011 Coach Teresa here. I had asked Juliane Cortino to email me some photos of her book launch (yesterday). Here’s her report:

“We were 54 altogether at my book party. Really nice people. Novato City Councilwoman Pat Eklund stopped by and talked a few minutes about Relay For Life. The community mission director for the American Cancer Society, Joan Houkum, stopped in and spoke about a cancer fighting initiative on the ballot next June. I gave a short reading and sold 39 books! Very exciting for me. We stayed an hour longer that I’d booked the room for. They had to kick us out, and some people kept chatting on the sidewalk by their cars. The food was great. I really recommend Homeward Bound in Novato, CA for special events. They are the best!

Take care,

Juli C.”

I met Juliane Cortino at the Women’s National Book Association’s 2009 National Reading Group Month event at Book Passage. Since that meeting I have witnessed her kindness at planning meetings.

Author Juliane Cortino says:

“As a girl, I often said I would like to die at age forty. That way I would not have to grow sick or old. As a somewhat mature adult, I came to know the wisdom of growing older. Becoming sick was not in the plan. Illness struck without notice and showed itself during a routine exam. I share my experience in Nothing Can Scare Me Now: Managing Breast Cancer So It Doesn’t Manage You. The book is meant to comfort while it informs. I hope it will help you in your journey.

Born in Tokyo and educated around the globe, I remain devoted to exploring my world through the written word. I’ve been a reporter for United Press International, editor for Information Week magazine, and freelance news writer for ABC-TV. Subjects covered over the past thirty years range from food to health and technology. My articles have appeared in PC Week, The San Francisco Examiner, and The San Jose Mercury News.”

I cheer for Juliane, her book, and her advocacy work!

August 25, 2011  Coach Teresa here, adding the link to Lori Hope’s humorous/serious article at  Huffington Post:  Lori Hope: Direct Mail and How to Help Someone with Cancer

It was a lucky day for me when Vicki Weiland (dear colleague at Women’s National Book Association-San Francisco Chapter) called me to say: “Teresa, Lori Hope is looking for you!” Lori was the Managing Editor for Bay Area Business Woman News at the time; she invited me to talk about the themes in my novel Love Made of Heart.  When the interview (entitled “Bleeding Heart Bleeds Love” ) was published under the “Off the Shelf” column, I read Lori’s words and cried and cried. My mom would have been so proud.

What I had learned about the publishing industry was this:  busy people giving their time and energy to help newbies are walking-angels. Lori Hope was reviewing the galley proofs of her own book Help Me Live: 20 Things People with Cancer Want You to Know.  We know how thrilling and time-consuming that task is.  So, that’s how I remember my first meetings with Lori–she was generous, kind, and inspiring.

Recently, when I saw that Lori Hope commented on my post about Anna L. Marks, I was tickled to hear from her. But,  then I read Lori’s words: “Just recovering from cancer treatment . . . ”

I got very sad (this news meant a recurrence of lung cancer for Lori?). I read on. Lori said: ” . . . expanded and revised edition of Help Me: 20 Things People with Cancer Want You to Know comes out Sept. 13!   With love and always hope,  Lori”

“Always hope.”  Lori’s last name is also her gift to the world. She is a dear powerful spirit.

Lori’s “author’s journey” is her Hero’s journey.

Lori Hope says: "What do you say to someone with cancer — how do you show how much you care?"

I recommend Lori’s blog:  What Helps. What Hurts. What Heals.

Lori’s post “Dance With Me” where she says: “No sign of metastasis…” is truly music.

Is Lori Hope the WonderWoman behind “how to help, heal, and keep hope alive” ?   YES!

The second edition of Help Me Live: 20 Things People with Cancer Want You to Know, which includes a new foreword by Rachel Naomi Remen, MD, new sections on gender, childhood and young adult cancers, and a survey of 600+ survivors, will be available September 13, 2011. News about appearances/fundraisers will be available soon. Please visit Lori’s website

Sincerely,

Teresa

How Does a Bookstore Get Selected to Receive the Pannell Award?

In 1981, the Women’s National Book Association established the WNBA Pannell Award to recognize and publicly applaud the work of booksellers who stimulate, promote and encourage children’s and young people’s interest in books. Lucile Micheels Pannell, a founding member of one of the WNBA chapters, was born in the late 1800s. A model bookwoman, her career included teaching in a one-room schoolhouse, working as a librarian, then managing the Hobby Horse Bookshop in Chicago’s Carson Pirie Scott department store from 1943 to 1953. Although she had no children of her own, Lucile loved reading to children and introducing them to the world of books. Chicago schools would sponsor field trips to the Hobby Horse Bookshop because children and teachers loved visiting with Lucile to listen to stories and learn about the world of books. This Award is our way to honor Lucile’s special role in WNBA’s history.

2008 Kepler’s Books and Magazines of Menlo Park, CA was the winner!  Coach Teresa here witnessed their receiving the award. The folks at Kepler’s are local heroes.

2011 Pannell Award Winners

The 2011 winner in the General Bookstore category is Queen Anne Books in Seattle, WA. The Children’s Specialty Store category winner is Fairytales Bookstore in Nashville, TN.

A jury of five book industry professionals deliberated for four weeks, then selected the winners based on creativity, responsiveness to community needs and an understanding of young readers. Jurors expressed admiration for all the nominated stores. In particular, the reasons they gave for the selected bookstores included:

In addition to WNBA, the Pannell Award is underwritten by a generous gift from Penguin Young Readers Group. Each winning store will receive a check for $1,000 and a framed piece of original art by a children’s book illustrator.  This year’s art is contributed by Erin E. Stead, current Caldecott Medalist, from the upcoming book …and then it’s spring, by Julie Fogliano, which will be published next February by Neal Porter Books/Roaring Brook/MacMillan; and Matthew Myers from the book Tyrannosaurus Dad by Liz Rosenberg, also published by Neal Porter Books/Roaring Brook/MacMillan.  The presentation of the awards will be at opening of the Children’s Book and Author Breakfast at BEA on May 24th, 2011 in New York.

Jurors this year included Deborah Brodie, editor, book doctor and writing coach at DeborahBrodie.com; Susan Knopf, President, Scout Books and Media; Yolanda Scott, editorial director, Charlesbridge; Manuela Soares, lecturer and director of the Graduate Seminar, Pace University’s Publishing Program; and Gail Vinett, lead buyer, Ingram Content Group.

Coach Teresa, who is Anna L. Marks and how does she take on the world?

Anna L. Marks was the superwoman behind the print newspaper Bay Area BusinessWoman News (it was available at news-stands in financial and commercial districts all over the greater San Francisco Bay Area, CA).  Anna’s publication helped women create national platforms for themselves before the word “platform” was used  in the business world.  Brava, Anna!

I was one of the lucky authors who was interviewed by Lori Hope (Managing Editor for BABW at the time) who had found me through Vicki Weiland and Women’s National Book Association.

Anna sold the paper to Debra Costner and I’ll blog about Debra soon.

What is Anna up to these days?

Anna L. MARKS – Producer at Hungry Mind Recordings

Anna L. Marks is a serial social entrepreneur. She is the creator and founder of Conscious Life Magazine and Bay Area BusinessWoman News where she served as publisher and editor-in-chief for over 15 years. Marks has been on numerous boards, and currently serves on the Alameda County Women’s Commission. She was awarded “Businesswoman of the Year” by San Fransisco Business and Professional Women; and “Social Entrepreneur of the Year” by the San Francisco chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners. Marks is passionate about using new media as a change agent for global progress in the new millennium.

On the HMR website, there’s a category entitled “Women Take On the World.”  Anna L. Marks is definitely one of these women!

By the way, here’s the praise from Lori Hope for Love Made of Heart:

“The book’s title (Love Made of Heart) refers to the fact that the Chinese word for ‘heart’ is embedded within the word ‘love.’ The book is about love, liberation and forgiveness. For those seeking inspiration during difficult times, this courageous book is half hot tub, half massage. But only after some painful, albeit unpredictable plot twists.”

Thank you, Lori! I’ll be blogging about you too.

Cheers to Anna and everyone she works with!

Literary & Trademark Attorney Robert G. Pimm says “Creative People Make Great Clients”

I had met Bob Pimm at a writers conference. Was it the Jack London Writers Conference?  Or the East of Eden Writers Conference? Bob had delivered a helpful session– “Anatomy of a Book Publishing Contract.”

I was already a published author at the time.  My contract with Kensington Corp. NY had been reviewed by my agent Stacey Glick and the in-house attorney (both at Dystel Literary Management, now Dystel & Goderich Literary Management).

I was so impressed with Bob’s presentation that when I found out he was also an expert in trademark laws, I sought his advice for registering my Love Made Of Heart.

Check out Robert G. Pimm’s website and benefit from his resources page.

Contracts are written in “complex languages” (not to mention keeping track of renewal dates and proof of use–with trademarks) so be sure to seek an expert’s advice.

Bob Pimm’s areas of expertise include:

Literary and Publishing Law

More than 20 years experience in the book industry working with authors, publishers, book distribution, book production, book retailing and literary agency.

Entertainment Law

Serving visual artists, playwrights, filmmakers, producers, and performers. Currently Book Publication Chair of the American Bar Association’s Forum on the Entertainment and Sports Industries and former Editor-in-Chief of the Forum’s quarterly publication, Entertainment and Sports Lawyer.

Intellectual Property Law

Registration and management of copyrights and trademarks, licensing of intellectual property, rights of privacy and publicity, and management of trade secrets for arts and technology.

Corporate Law

Formation of California C-Corporations, S-Corporations, Limited Liability Companies, Partnerships, Non-Profits and ongoing management issues for arts and technology companies.

What Is Practice Aloha?

In May at the Asian Heritage Street Celebration, I had shared a booth with authors Margie Yee Webb and Dr. Patricia Tsang. Our neighboring exhibitors were the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau. Today while putting away my files, I found their promotional material. Seeing those souvenirs inspired me to tell  you about a new book Practice Aloha: Secrets to Living Life Hawaiian Style — Stories, Recipes and Lyrics from Hawai’i's Favorite Folks, compiled & edited by Barbara Santos & Mark Ellman

How do you practice Aloha? Go to the Practice Aloha website and share your story.

Two other books that go well with Practice Aloha:

Cat Mulan’s Mindful Musings: Insight and Inspiration for a Wonderful Life

Optimal Healing: A Guide to Traditional Chinese Medicine

Coach Teresa, when and where is the Sonoma County Book Festival 2011?

September 24, 2011  10:00am – 4:00pm

The Sonoma County Book Festival

Old Courthouse Square, Santa Rosa, CA

Teresa LeYung-Ryan says: “Special thanks to Kate Farrell, Ana Manwaring, Linda Loveland Reid and everyone at Redwood Writers! I’m so happy to return to the Sonoma County Book Festival this year, sharing a booth with Kate Farrell & Margie Yee Webb (two of my favorite colleagues from Women’s National Book Association and California Writers Club) and showcasing my new workbook Build Your Writer’s Platform & Fanbase In 22 Days. Maxine Hong Kingston, the author who had inspired me to write my novel, will be there too! I use my novel Love Made of Heart to inspire adult children of mentally ill parents to speak openly about the stigmas and find resources for their families. Maxine plays a huge role in my workbook as well. Can’t wait to see her and be with all fellow literacy advocates. What is the “I Sent Bastard to School” Fund created by Vicki Hudson?

Hi Teresa,

Thanks for the update.
I’m working on a project I wanted to let you know about and ask that you send it out to your network. This came from hearing Dorothy Allison and the Fremont High School (California) teacher and student talk at the last San Francisco Writers Conference about Fremont school board censoring Dorothy’s  book. I’m raising funds to purchase books. Please check out the site: http://www.indiegogo.com/Send-Bastard2School

Thanks!

Coach Teresa, How Do Writers & Authors Rebuild Their Lives?

June 28, 2011 was a delightful display of authors rebuilding their lives.

Birgit Soyka and I (Teresa LeYung Ryan) were the featured authors at our Women’s National Book Association-San Francisco Chapter event at BookShop West Portal in San Francisco.

Birgit Soyka and Teresa LeYung Ryan celebrate Rebuild Your Life Month at BookShop West Portal - photo by Teresa's sister Maria

Birgit Soyka rebuilt her life, leaving Germany and coming to California. Motorcycle racing there and motorcycle racing here – two different worlds. Read her book To Drink the Wild Air.

I, Teresa LeYung-Ryan, rebuilt my career after Love Made of Heart was published by Kensington Publishing Corp. New York.  I discovered that I had an eye as an editor–helping other writers identify the themes and archetypes in their stories, so, I became a manuscript consultant.  Then when my clients reported that agents and publishers passed them by because they (the writers) didn’t have platforms and fanbases, I became a writing career coach for them.  And, I published Build Your Writer’s Platform & Fanbase In 22 Days: Attract Agents, Editors, Publishers, Readers, and Media Attention NOW

Neal Sofman, the owner of BookShop West Portal, had to rebuild his business. Remember A Clean Well Lighted Place for Books? Those bookstores were owned by Neal.  To survive hard times, he had to close those stores.  Closure of one dream, invitation to another dream. BookShop West Portal in San Francisco is thriving.

I thank everyone who stepped out on rainy June 28, 2011 to support BookShop West Portal, WNBA, Birgit Soyka and yours truly Teresa LeYung-Ryan. May everyone who wants to rebuild her/his life do it joyfully.

Thank you to Neal, Kevin, Loretta, Jose, Jess at BookShop West Portal, Leigh Anne Lindsey, Birgit, Birgit’s friends, my sister and my friends Jonathan, Paula, Michelle Tapia, Miss Lauren Jung, bookstore loyalists and everyone there that evening.

And, remember, “Reach out, not stress out, when building or rebuilding your platform and fanbase!”
