“For a very long time scientists thought the brain was an organ beyond treatment. If something went wrong or if one was born with a deficit, the conclusion was ‘tough luck.’ Not so anymore. There are revolutionary techniques that can alleviate anything from chronic pain to Parkinson’s disease or Down syndrome. Dr. Norman Doidge lays it out in his book The Brain’s Way of Healing: Remarkable Discoveries and Recoveries from the Frontiers of Neuroplasticity. He’ll discuss this, and more, with Steve Paikin. ”
Dr. Norman Doidge explains:
“The Brain is NOT like a fixed hard-wired machine. The Brain changes it’s wiring – the word that describes this property is neuroplasticity. The Brain’s structure and functions can be changed by our activities and by our mental experiences.”
“Using energy to facilitate neuroplasticity for healing. The ancient word ‘hælan’ – to cure, to restore, to make whole again.”

2024 June 4, 12:54pm; June 5, 10:43am; June 6, 19:46 California (Mille merci, chere Sabine!)
Dear Readers
I wish you a good day and night, always.
Thank you, Mr. Roald Dahl, for having written ESIO TROT ( esiotrot is “tortoise” spelled backward)
Thank you, screenwriters Richard Curtis and Paul Mayhew-Archer, for the movie ROALD DAHL’S ESIO TROT
When depression robs my creative energy to write, I look for “happy movies” to lift me which then inspires me to write about the themes in the movie which then leads me to resume working on my own projects.
Yesterday (June 3), the names (“tags”) of these two actors helped me find the movie ROALD DAHL’S ESIO TROT
Judi Dench (as Mrs. Silver) and Dustin Hoffman (as Mr. Hoppy) and James Corden (as Narrator)
Soundtrack includes Louis Armstrong’s singing “A Kiss To Build A Dream On” composed by Bert Kalmar, Harry Ruby and Oscar Hammerstein II.
https://genius.com/Louis-armstrong-a-kiss-to-build-a-dream-on-lyrics
This is a movie I want to watch again and again… it’s like re-living a joyful day.
In the movie… Narrator tells us:
“Mr. Hoppy, the hero of our story, lived in a nice flat in an apartment block in London. There are three things you should know about Mr. Hoppy. He’s kind, he’s shy, and, most importantly, he’s not that guy in the hat.”
(Mr. Hoppy is the man holding the elevator door for Mr. Mavrokoukoudopolous the old man with the hat and cane. By the way, since the setting is London. Elevator is called a “lift”)
At the fourth viewing of this movie … I see just how wonderfully the story is crafted.
At two minutes into the movie – first foreshadowing of Mr. Hoppy’s door which is crucial for the “climax” scene.
He turns on his CD player – Louis Armstrong’s singing “A Kiss To Build A Dream On”
Mr. Hoppy reaches into his satchel and places into his fruit bowl – one apple, one orange, one banana. He opens his refrigerator, we see one tomato.
Narrator tells us “It’s [This story is] going to be full of passion, surprises… as indeed is our Mr. Hoppy.”
As the volume of the musical instrumental increases, we see Mr. Hoppy affectionately tending to his balcony-garden; his irrigation system drips water onto the colorful plants.
Narrator says:
“The truth is, there were two loves in Mr. Hoppy’s life. One was his flowers. The other was his secret love that he kept all to himself. Like so many secrets, it was the most important thing of all about him. Because Mr. Hoppy was in love… with the girl downstairs.”
(“the girl” is the vibrant Mrs. Silver, a widow,, probably in her seventies. Mrs. Silver’s balcony is on the floor below Mr. Hoppy’s. We hear her at around four minutes and thirty-three seconds into the movie when she says “Good morning, Mr. Hoppy.” Then we see her. Her main love is her tortoise named Alfie.)
By the end of the first five minutes, I am pulled into the story world.
By the end of the first seven minutes, I am completely hooked with these two characters.
At 13:36 when Mr. Hoppy has the courage to say something personal to Mrs. Silver, he can’t see from his balcony that Mrs. Silver (in her wide-brimmed straw hat) has just inserted earbuds and couldn’t possibly hear him.
At 28:57 we see the second foreshadowing with Mr. Hoppy’s door.
At 54:38 we see the third foreshadowing with that door.
LAUGHING LIFTS DEPRESSION
In the scene where Mr. Hoppy is approaching the lift in the lobby with THE gadget, Mrs. Silver (wearing happy colors) is coming out of the lift. She tells him that she’s going to a dance marathon to raise money for charity and that they need sponsors. Mr. Hoppy says he would like to be a sponsor, would donate a pound. When Mrs. Silver reminds him that this is for charity, he says:
“A pound a minute”
(I laughed out loud; laughing shifts energy, lifts depression. So does smiling for one’s self. For me, laughing is a stronger elixir.)
I learned these British phrases:
“very good news” - In the lift (elevator), Mrs. Silver says: “What a quiet lift. It’s very good news.”
She calls herself “a silly sausage”
“a good old knees-up” means “to dance”
The little boy’s mother says to her son: “I’m doing dinner.”
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
In the children’s book, Mrs. Silver never finds out about Mr. Hoppy’s using deception to win her affections; in the movie, her finding out that he used trickery serves as the climax of the story.
In the children’s book, there is no Mr. Pringle; in the movie, this character serves as archetypes Herald and Trickster and is the person who creates complications for protagonist Mr. Hoppy.

Four smoothened wood boxes represent my dream home ? a place where I can balance the four areas of my life. The green, blue, pink, gold (from paintings and mixed media art created by Cynthia Tom, Cris Matos, Chandra Garsson, Maria K.W. Leung) represent my affinity with Nature.
I dream of four desks so that I would not have to constantly clear off table space to make room for one project while having to put away my other projects.
All that I do and want to do are equally precious to me. Just as there are four points on a compass, my four desks will allow me to go forward with my work with clarity.
And, when I say work, I am talking about what makes me want to get up each morning with a smile on my face and a spring in my walk. I think beauty. I become beauty.
I transform “I was” to “I AM”
I was a child witness to family violence.
I was a frightened immigrant.
I was an adult receiver of violence.
I AM Teresa Jade LeYung who speaks openly through my writing and advocacy, my immigrant experience, and my knowing beauty. As an author, a story consultant, and a found-object artist and student of A PLACE OF HER OWN™, I empower women to transform their own stories. I think beauty. I AM beauty. Hello Everyone,
I wish you total wellness.
I am grateful to all the people who care about my wellness / who teach me how to look for the goodness in obstacles / who inspire me to be happy, in spite of illness.
-
-
So many people suffer silently – their illnesses don’t display overt signs like wearing a cast or a splint. Whenever someone asks me the question “How are you doing?” … I feel gratitude and I reply “Thank you for asking.” (That’s all… I don’t go into details except with close friends. Just grateful that the person asked) Whenever I ask someone that question… I am prepared to stop and listen.

Illness propels us to all the stages of a Hero’s Journey, whether we want to go or not; for me, the stages are repeating – I would feel better, then worse, then better… My Body knows so much more than my conscious Brain.

The person who introduced story-telling to me was my mother who was a school teacher in Hong Kong before she immigrated to the USA; she told me stories – translations of Aesop’s Fables. Even though I don’t remember details of the fables, I do recall how a character’s “cleverness” or “perseverance” can get one out of trouble.
(Thank you, the folks at https://www.umass.edu/aesop/fables.php, for showing Aesop’s Fables.)
The person who told me about the book that would inspire me to write about my experiences is Dr. Susan Thackrey, Ph.D. who taught me compassion.
The author who wrote that book (The Woman Warrior: Memoirs of a Girlhood Among Ghosts) is Maxine Hong Kingston.
In 1998 award-winning writer Martha Alderson (who would become The Plot Whisperer https://marthaalderson.com/books-and-ebooks/) introduced me to Christopher Volger’s book The Writer”s Journey: Mythic Structure for Writers.
Fast forward to 2023…

Hello Everyone,
I wish you vibrant health!
Thanks to Everyone Who Cares About me, Healers, Books, Our Immune System, Our Beautiful Ever-Changing Brain, Our Internal Organs, Our Body and Vitality!
In August 2020 (which was five months into “Shelter In Place” in the county I lived in during the COVID pandemic), Shingles virus “woke up” in my body …oh the pain and the rash on one side of upper torso. Then after the blisters cleared, the overwhelming pain stayed. This condition is called “postherpetic neuralgia”.
Brain-Body worn out from fighting. So-called pain meds flooded my systems to the point I was too dizzy to make my way to the toilet without having to use the nearest wall for support. Warning labels on prescriptions said “take with food” which meant setting the clock to wake myself every few hours… depriving my body of rest.
The reason for “take with food” and how just one accidental overdose of pain meds could damage my liver or kidneys and how to give myself uninterrupted sleep … were explained to me by a nurse who practiced “slow medicine” on the phone with me; she even helped me create a schedule so that I wouldn’t be taking the meds that require “take with food” while I should be sleeping.
I thank Victoria Sweet, M.D. for writing her books:
GOD’S HOTEL: A Doctor, a Hospital, and a Pilgrimage to the Heart of Medicine.
SLOW MEDICINE The Way to Healing
My pain just would not stop, even though the Shingles virus had run its course and the rash had healed.
Fast forward
Luckily for me, through neuroplasticity coaching from Dr. Danielle Rosenman, and,
books by Norman Doidge, M.D., and,
lectures by Professor Lorimer Moseley about the “role of pain” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5p6sbi_0lLc
and the workbook TRANSFORMING THE BRAIN IN PAIN: NEUROPLASTIC TRANSFORMATION by Dr. Michael H. Moskowitz and Dr. Marla D. Golden,
and, moral support from dear folks who care about me …
I was successful retraining my Brain to stop sending chronic pain signals to Body Tissue.
However the pain sensation morphed into a sticky damp heat sensation.
These symptoms then awakened another virus in my nervous system. Also, COVID-Vaccination worsened my condition.
My internal thermostat is stuck at an uncomfortable down right yucky setting. My immune system had needed to use heat when Shingles virus got activated; however, my system is still in “fight” mode three years later.
Illness leads to depression … a nasty loop.
This is what happens when our systems are “too aggressive” trying to protect us.
By the way – Shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus — the same virus that causes chickenpox. After a person has had chickenpox, the virus lies inactive in nerve tissue near the spinal cord and brain. Years later, the virus may reactivate as shingles. https://www.mayoclinic.org/
The “memories” of viruses (keloid scars from Shingles rash a “convincing” reminder)… telling my systems to continue fighting. Body doesn’t forget anything!
Fast forward, again…
Through receiving Chi Nei Tsang treatments from Marie-Christine Cornet, and from Gilles Marin, master teacher and practitioner, and from Stephanie Wilger, NC, instructor-level practitioner … my Body learned new ways to communicate with the Brain
Through sessions with Dr. Amy Grace Lam, my conscious Brain learned how to listen to my Body and how to respond.
Through receiving Neuro Integration System (N.I.S.) treatments and Neuro Emotional Technique (NET) treatments from a master-level practitioner who is a chiropractor – Dr. Jae Reed, D.C … my Body-Brain circuitry is learning how to reset and restore systems to harmony.
Clear communication between Brain and Body REMOVES the obstacles, letting the Body repair itself the best way possible - naturally.

Chi Nei Tsang translates as “internal organs chi transformation”.

* * * * * * * * * * * * *
Thanks to the encouragement from the folks I care about and who care about me, I resume my work as a writer and story-consult and blogger, go to treatments, re-read books to learn about how hard the human body works, and, I turn depression into appreciating one moment at a time.
My Quest to Wellness by learning from Holistic Healers on how to receive and send instructions for what I call “Brain-Body peace talks”.

Page 62 of the book IMMUNE: A Journey into the Mysterious System That Keeps You Alive by Philipp Dettmer
“Inflammation is the universal response of your immune system to any sort of breach or damage or insult. No matter if you burn yourself, cut yourself, or get a bruise. No matter if bacteria or viruses infect your nose, lungs, or gut. No matter if a young tumor kills a few civilian cells by stealing their nutrients or you have an allergic reaction to a food, inflammation is the response. Damage or danger – PERCEIVED OR REAL – causes inflammation.”
Book description from the publisher:
“You wake up and feel a tickle in your throat. Your head hurts. You’re mildly annoyed as you get the kids ready for school and dress for work yourself. Meanwhile, an epic war is being fought, just below your skin. Millions are fighting and dying for you to be able to complain as you head out the door.
“But most of us never really stop to ask: What even is our immune system?
“Second only to the human brain in its complexity, it is one of the oldest and most critical facets of life on Earth. Without it, you would die within days. In IMMUNE, Philipp Dettmer, the brains behind the most popular science channel on YouTube, takes readers on a journey through the fortress of the human body and its defenses. There is a constant battle of staggering scale raging within us, full of stories of invasion, strategy, defeat, and noble self-sacrifice. In fact, in the time you’ve been reading this, your immune system has probably identified and eradicated a cancer cell that started to grow in your body.
“Each chapter delves into an element of the immune system, including defenses like antibodies and inflammation as well as threats like bacteria, allergies, and cancer, as Dettmer reveals why boosting your immune system is actually nonsense, how parasites sneak their way past your body’s defenses, how viruses work, and what goes on in your wounds when you cut yourself.
“Enlivened by engaging full-color graphics and immersive descriptions, IMMUNE turns one of the most intricate, interconnected, and confusing subjects — immunology — into a gripping adventure through an astonishing alien landscape. IMMUNE is a vital and remarkably fun crash course in what is arguably, and increasingly, the most important system in the body.”

2023 January 9, 20:40 California – Teresa Jade LeYung’s blog post #619
Dear Reader,
Today I responded to a post from a fellow-member of Women’s Brain Exchange network. Her subject line was: “Recommendations for Parkinson’s”
I wish to share my response through this blog post.
I cheer for all brave folks who are coping with disease and illness and all the compassionate advocates!
I was an advocate for my father – he thrived in spite of Parkinson’s.
Information is powerful! What I had learned as an advocate enriched my own life and also everyone else’s in Papa’s community.
Be ahead of the game – know that Parkinson’s is a movement disorder… thus, find (not just a general neurologist) but a neurologist whose patient base is mainly movement disorder patients and who does not rely on “old” techniques.
Same for physical therapists – folks who aren’t trained in movement disorders caused heartaches for Papa. The right folks taught my father ways to “refresh” the brain.
RESOURCES:

When one is not feeling well… learning new ways to improve one’s health can be overwhelming. I wish everyone compassionate advocates to help make the journey a gentler one.

“COVID Raises Risk of Long-Term Brain Injury, Large U.S. Study Finds”
Sept. 22, 2022 By Julie Steenhuysen
CHICAGO (Reuters) – People who had COVID-19 are at higher risk for a host of brain injuries a year later compared with people who were never infected by the coronavirus, a finding that could affect millions of Americans, U.S. researchers reported on Thursday.
The year-long study, published in Nature Medicine, assessed brain health across 44 different disorders using medical records without patient identifiers from millions of U.S. veterans.
Brain and other neurological disorders occurred in 7% more of those who had been infected with COVID compared with a similar group of veterans who had never been infected. That translates into roughly 6.6 million Americans who had brain impairments linked with their COVID infections, the team said.
[....]
Compared with the control groups, people infected with COVID had a 77% higher risk of developing memory problems.
People infected with the virus also were 50% more likely to have an ischemic stroke, which is caused by blood clots, compared with the never infected group.
Those who had COVID were 80% more likely to have seizures, 43% more likely to have mental health issues, such as anxiety or depression, 35% more likely to have headaches and 42% more likely to suffer movement disorders, such as tremors, compared with the control groups.

OUR BEAUTIFUL BRAINS
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Danielle Rosenman, M.D. says:
“The brain changes itself constantly throughout our entire lives. All of our experience changes the brain.
“Everything that we experience, think, feel, believe, and learn changes the physical structure of the brain, the chemicals in the brain, and electricity in the brain.
“This ability of the brain to change is called neuroplasticity.
“Neuroplasticity lets us learn through our entire lives. The more often we repeat a task, the better we learn it. Repetition helps us learn things like reading, adding numbers, or playing a musical instrument. We often call this type of learning ‘practice’.”
During neuroplasticity coaching, Dr. Danielle Rosenman instructs: “Smile for yourself and talk out loud to your brain. When you learn to talk to your brain, you are opening up a new life.”

On page 4 of workbook TRANSFORMING THE BRAIN IN PAIN: NEUROPLASTIC TRANSFORMATION,
Dr. Michael H. Moskowitz and Dr. Marla D. Golden enlighten:
“Without your brain, there is no pain. Your brain doesn’t just receive information from your body, but sends directions back out to tell your body what to do.
“Your brain ‘reads’ everything going on in your body 30 times a second for your entire life.
“The adult brain changes throughout our lives based upon the information it receives from our bodies.
“We only experience pain when the electrical signals reach the thinking part of our brains.”
“This is why during surgery, when general anesthesia shuts down the thinking part of the brain, the person doesn’t feel pain.”
And… Dr. Moskowitz and Dr. Golden say: “The more sensation each part of your body has, the bigger the image of that body part in your brain (page 4 of workbook) … Shrink the pain map by flooding the brain using:
…thoughts, images, senses, memories, soothing emotions, movement, beliefs.” (page 13 of their workbook)

Dear Readers,
I wish you and everyone around you – wellness, kindness, happiness.
I celebrate these two women -
Ms. Maria Kawah Leung and Ms. Goldie Hawn
Maria Kawah Leung is the author of a delightfully illustrated children’s book about a serious subject matter – domestic violence. https://mariakawah.com/
LITTLE HEROES OF BAY STREET: And How They Stay Strong In An Unhappy Home
(illustrators: Maria Kawah Leung, Sandra Elyse Chavez, Maren Sleire Aasgaard)
This book is endorsed by Hannah Yeoh who is a Member of Parliament in Malaysia.
The main characters in LITTLE HEROES OF BAY STREET are Mia (a little girl) and her Happy Dog (who is much much more than a stuffed animal). Happy Dog is Mia’s best friend and confidant.
Maria Kawah Leung says:
“I was born in Hong Kong but my family moved to San Francisco when I was almost two years old. I have happily been a teacher of young children for over 25 years and have taught in the USA (California and Massachusetts), China and Malaysia.
“My most rewarding experiences in life were working with children in pediatric wards, studying Chinese in Beijing, China and studying Spanish in Bogota, Colombia.
“I have also traveled to about 30 countries and all the continents except Antarctica. I have always enjoyed writing. Creating this book to help children feel they are not alone has been a life-long goal.
“Empowering children to overcome obstacles is my passion. This is why I wrote the children’s book Little Heroes of Bay Street and How They Stay Strong in an Unhappy Home.”
Ms. Leung adds: “I’m hoping that through my book… that every teacher would get a copy… and school counselors… nurses… so that they can be aware, and, look out for signs, and reach out to these children.”
Maria’s book is available in English, Chinese, Spanish and Bahasa Malaysia

As I watch Ms. Goldie Hawn’s keynote speech at Teachers College, Columbia University … I think about Ms. Maria Kawah Leung as teacher, author, children’s advocate.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rh5-Pwj9T8E 39 minutes
Ms. Hawn’s foundation is MindUP https://mindup.org/
“Why aren’t we teaching kids about their brain?” When the teacher says “Pay attention.”… how can children know what that means when they don’t know about their brains? “The brain has plasticity.” “What the amygdala is.” “Nobody knows what the kids are feeling. Kids and silent stress.”
Through MindUp … kids learn how to practice kindness, what being mindful is.”
Based firmly in neuroscience, MindUP teaches the skills and knowledge children need to regulate their stress and emotion, form positive relationships, and act with kindness and compassion.
MindUP was created in response to the global epidemic of:
-
childhood aggression
-
anxiety
-
depression
-
suicide

A thousand bows to Dr. Amy Grace Lam for the two statements that contain words to awaken a new healing path in me:
“My body gets attention when it is sick.” “My body gets ignored when it is well.”
That behavioral pattern (giving/receiving care; NOT giving/receiving care) was the norm in our family – my father would turn off his rage and my mother would turn off her anguish when one of us kids got sick – getting sick meant receiving quiet and caring attention.
Ever since the outbreak of Shingles* virus on my body in 2020 … my Brain has been “overprotecting” body tissue by sending pain (in the initial months) and then other unpleasant sensations (since 2021) as a way of getting my attention, thus, reinforcing the pattern “my body gets attention when it is sick”.
I have created a new pattern to practice: “My body gets my attention in health and in sickness”
(Interesting … my Body deserves the vows spoken on one’s wedding day: ” … from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death us do part ….”)
[ * Shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus — the same virus that causes chickenpox. After a person has had chickenpox, the virus lies inactive in nerve tissue near the spinal cord and brain. Years later, the virus may reactivate as shingles. https://www.mayoclinic.org ]
The word “pray” used to turn on my skepticism. So did other words.
Then I learned how to listen. And to ask questions. And to listen some more….
Now I use some of those words myself – to wish for wellness.
My reaction to words had prolonged illness, again and again. I would get on a healing path, then would fall off the road. It’s only these recent years that I’ve learned to listen to my own Body and the symptoms, and, speak words that inspire radiant health.
The tools came from my dear housemate, friends, sister, certain relatives, mentors, writers, artists, musicians, and, from these extraordinary healers – Dr. Amy Grace Lam (vibrational energy coach); Marie-Christine Cornet (now in France – Chi Nei Tsang and Somatic Experience practitioner); Gilles Marin (master practitioner and teacher, author, director of the Chi Nei Tsang Institute, California) – I am honored to be Gilles’s manuscript consultant for his fourth book; Stephanie Doucette, M.S., L.Ac., Dipl. OM (California Licensed Acupuncturist and Clinical Herbalist); and all the other healers referenced in my blog posts.
Here are some words spoken by healers Dr. Amy Grace Lam, Gilles Marin, Stephanie Doucette that I’ve learned to decipher in my quest for wellness. I first heard some of these words from poet / playwright / Black Arts Movement Historian Kim McMillon, Ph.D. https://www.linkedin.com/in/kmcmillon more than 35 years ago:
* Five Elements – Earth, Air, Water, Fire, Wood
* Longevity, Vitality, Balance, Harmony
* Radiant Health
* Organs, Organ System – Liver, Kidney, Spleen
* What is Damp Heat, Slippery Pulse, Stagnation
* Chi (Qi), Meridians, Channels
* Yin, Yang, Deficiency, Wind
* Meditation, Chakras, Inhale, Exhale, Breathing
A thousand bows to Dr. Amy Grace Lam for the two statements that contain words to awaken a new healing path in me:
“My body gets attention when it is sick.”
“My body gets ignored when it is well.”
There is much suffering on our planet – COVID pandemic; everyone in and near the Ukraine.
The vibrant wellness I want for myself is what I wish and what I pray for everyone, near and far.
For Everyone – Total Healing, Radiant Health, Balance and Harmony, Joy and Loving Kindness
