at the Alderson GardenDear pal Martha Alderson (the international plot consultant) and her husband Bob invited us to their home for a barbecue, so, another dear pal Marie Elena (the metaphysical consultant) and I, with our husbands, carpooled to Santa Cruz.  The 6 of us headed for The Hook, and it was a great day to do that—sunny, cool and breezy.  Surfers were out.  I called up our buddy Luisa Adams (who, with her husband, would have been with us too if she weren’t at her Enchanted Lake).

On the return trip from The Hook,  Martha wanted to walk on the beach.  Sure.  We drove all this way, let’s get onto sand.  Hmm… we had to maneuver around boulders.  I slipped on kelp and my right knee landed on something coarse. I thought  Oh now you’ve done it— it’s going to hurt  like crazy later, so, I turned back toward higher ground.  That’s when the tide rolled in and soaked my right pant leg. “Never turn your back to the ocean,” Martha advised. What a wonderful metaphor!

As we continued walking back to the house,  I thought about how Marisa (my friend who died last week) would have loved being in the water.  Here’s to you, Mountain Lake Turtle!  When we arrived at the house, I took out the Neosporin (I always have it in my bag).  Imagine my surprise when I rolled up my right pant to see that my knee was neither bloody nor bruised.  I applied some ointment anyway.  Maybe Marisa was thinking of me too.

I had a lovely time, eating, listening to everyone’s stories and my husband’s ukulele, taking a few photos, enjoying the blue sky.

8 hours later, I’m home. After tidying up my kitchen, I see in my in-box an email from Judith Marshall, telling me that her interview is on http://www.theauthorsshow.com/ Good going, Judie!  Articulate and candid.

I see on the schedule that Margaret Davis will be on the show on June 2nd.

24-May   Judith Marshall    Husbands May Come and Go but Friends are Forever – novel
2-Jun       Margaret Davis     Straight Down The Middle -  novel

My friend and colleague Elisa Southard and I met on Wednesday to outline our presentation for the San Francisco Writers Conference in February.

Conference registrants have described us as “The Elisa & Teresa Show” because we do skits to demonstrate our points, and, our sessions are always interactive.“Writing-Career Coach Teresa & Talking-Tagline Coach Elisa Southard love helping authors hook attention from agents and publishers.”

This year, SFWC creators Elizabeth Pomada & Michael Larsen want us to present: UPPING YOUR PLATFORM: Building Your Visibility Online and Off with YOUR Talking Tagline.
Fun! As a pre-conference exercise, I ask registrants to Google our names and see what our talking-taglines are.

Elisa Southard IS the Talking-Tagline Queen and the author of  Break Through the Noise: 9 Tools to Propel Your Marketing Message.

She’s my coach when I need to hook attention. She even dreamed up the main part of the title of my new guide !  Build Your Name, Beat the Game.  What a gift!  Thank you, Elisa!

Elisa’s working on a new book herself. Meanwhile I’d like to remind all writers (and anyone who has a service to provide) to visit her website.  http://breakthroughthenoise.com/

Elisa Southard's Break Through the NoiseElisa is often quoted as saying, “Don’t kill a marketing moment, execute it.”

Happy New Year, Elisa!  And Happy Writing your new book!

Exciting news!  Novels written by Judith Marshall and Margaret Davis have ingredients for the big screen–quirky characters, unusual circumstances, satisfying endings.

Sociologist Margaret Davis (author of Straight Down the Middle) offers a fresh take on the battle of the sexes.

“The battle of the sexes is over,” according to Maria Shriver in a Forbes Woman article (by Heidi Brown, October 16, 2009).  But does anyone really believe that?

Davis tackles the subject in a different way. Straight Down the Middle tells the tale of Diane who finds herself unwillingly pitched into such a battle.  Diane wants to have a baby, her long-time lover Cindy agrees, and they ask a neighbor Sam to father the child.  But after the baby boy is born, Diane finds herself in the middle of a heated tug-of-war between a strong-willed Sam who wants to maintain contact with his son, and an equally strong-willed  Cindy, who wants him gone.  Diane’s attempts to keep the peace lead to lies, intrigues and cover-ups galore—until finally, she is forced by circumstances to “get out of the middle” and search out her own needs and desires.

The book is “A fresh take on the battle of the sexes.  A smart, modern comedy with a deep heart,” says Author and Screenwriter Frank Baldwin.

Glamour Gal Judith Marshall (author of Husbands May Come and Go but Friends are Forever) celebrates fresh hopes, second chances, and the anything-but-simple art of relationships.http://judithmarshall.net/

Husbands May Come and Go but Friends are Forever is set in a small town in Northern California, in the spring of 2000 when the dot-com boom was at its peak. The story centers around Elizabeth Reilly-Hayden, a successful executive in her late fifties and a divorced mother of two. Emotionally armored and living alone, she wants only to maintain the status quo: her long-term significant other, her job and her trusted friends— five feisty women who first met in high school. Yet in a matter of days, the three anchors that have kept her moored are ripped away. The group of lifelong pals gathers at Lake Tahoe to attend to the funeral arrangements of their beloved friend, and tries to unravel the mystery of her death. Through their shared tragedy, Liz learns how disappointment and grief can bloom into healing and hope.

“Judith Marshall has written a book that, once you start it, you will not want to put down, and once you finish it, you will want to read again. It makes you remember that there is nothing quite so important as good friends.”—D.W. Buffa, author of Breach of Trust and many other legal thrillers.

Margaret & Judith,

I’m thrilled for the two of you. When your novels become Hollywood movies, I won’t wait for the release of DVDs; I will go to the cineplexes.

While looking for examples to show my clients how to find transcripts archived on websites, I came upon:

http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/05252007/profile.html

Veterans Of War, Veterans Of Peace

Thank you, Mr. Bill Moyers, and everyone at The Journal and PBS for interviewing Ms. Maxine Hong Kingston on May 25, 2007 and making the transcript and video available on that site. Thanks for reading excerpts from Veterans of War, Veterans of Peace with Maxine. Each story/poem written by the veteran or loved one of a veteran carried much compassion.  The book–what a magnificent gift from Maxine and the courageous men and women who transformed their suffering into what I call “word energy.”

The interview and the excerpts got me thinking about my mom who was an orphan in China during WWII. She never talked about her experiences; at times a word would slip out, but, she would stop herself. She died in 2000 and I would like to believe that she’s watching over me, encouraging me to write for people who cannot speak for themselves.

Maxine had inspired me to write my first book when in 1990 I read Woman Warrior: Memoirs of a Girlhood Among Ghosts. http://www.redroom.com/author/maxine-hong-kingston has other videos on Maxine and her work. Thanks again for the May 25, 2007 program.

Sincerely,
Teresa LeYung Ryan, author, writing-career coach
